Illinois Valley News. Thursday, December 21, 1911 Page Three 1_______ Army Asks Folks To Be Careful With Fire Residents of the West today were called upon by the Army to further support the war effort dur ing the nation’s fourth war-time Christmas season by preventing the traditional Yule tree from in advertently aiding the enemy. Major General William E. Shedd, commanding general of the Ninth Service Command, from his Fort Douglas, Utah, headquarters, urged all householders in the eight Western States to safeguard lives and property and prevent the holi day season from becoming one of tragedy by flame-proofing all Christmas tree decorations. In addition, he declared, in view of the non-manufacture of tree light-strings for a considerable time, persons should be certain that all electrical fixtures are prop erly installed and in good condi tion. That decorations are not allowed to come in contact with light globes. General Shedd, in extending the season’s greetings to all military personnel stationed within the command and civilian residents of the far Western states, suggested that the command safety director’s recommendation for fire-proofing trees be followed to assure a safe holiday season. The flame-proofing solution may be made by mixing 10 ounces of borax powder and 10 ounces of boric acid in one gallon of hot I water.
