Josephine county Is to repair the trail down the Rogue river, and so open up to the trade of this city a rich territory that has been going la other directions. The old Rogue river trail, built or iginally by the government at a cost ot from $12,000 to $15,000, has not been kept up properly of late years, and portions ot it are in very bad condition. This Is especially true from Bunker creek to Windy gulch, a distance ot three or four miles. This trail extends from Gallce to Agnes, a road being built from the latter point to the coast. The grade ot the trail is good, following the river, and making a route that can be traveled winter or summer. With this trail In bad repair the farmers and miners ot the lower Rogue have crossed the West Fork divide, and gone to Rosehurg to do their trading, but owing to Its altitude, the West Fork trail was not good for winter travel. A committee from the Commercial club consisting of Messrs. II. C. Kin ney, Fred Williams. W. T. Counts, E. T. McKlnstry and II. C. Bobzlen presented these facts to the county court, and that body has ordered that all funds derlred from the govern ment from the portion of the nation al forest in this county he used for the improvement of this trail. Under the federal law a per cent of the re ceipts for pasturage of stock or from other sources In the national forest Is returned to the county In which the forest Is located. This brings to Josephine county some $600 or $700 annually, enough, according to those who have been over the trail recent ly to put It In good shape. The forest service Is to furnish a man to direct the work. The grade will be kept tow, and later the trait can bo converted into a wagon road by simply widening It. Scenery of unsurpassed grandeur Is seen along the lower Rogue, and with the repairing of this trail, It will boroma much used by outers and pleasure seekers.
