They Mrs. v. u. seaion ano nn. . -- " 7 rinn DfTNA jTZJ III i :iIY ENGINEER HOBSON ON THE MACADAM ROAD Editor Courier: Since a number t property owners along the mac adam Improvement on South Sixth are questioning the methods being employed In its construction, I be lieve that a short discussion upon the subject may be profitable. , The argument has been advanced that "the foundation and bottom course of rock and binder is not be ing sufficiently rolled, and that roll ing is the one essential part of mac- adam road biuldlng. True enough. But the only good that can possibly be accomplished Uy. rolling, let it be much or little, Is in filling all the voids, and form ing a bond between the macadam material and the' sub-foundation. ; When these things have been ac complished further rolling Is un necessary " and may be detrimental. For instance, before the rains set In 'the sub-foundation was brought to Its proper grade and the subsequent traffic and heavy rains caused the aub-foundation to become a mass of mud for a depth of from 10 inches to two feet. Fortunately for the good of the street, It Is impossible to roll this mass of mud and the contractors have filled this mud and water with washed river .gravel, which forces the water and thin mud to the surface, which Is still sub grade, with the extra gravel worked Into and made a part of the sub foundation. When the macadam ma terial Is spread upon this foundation an excess of rolling would bring the mud and water to the surface again, t instead of It remaining on the bot tom to help from the bond of the macadam with the foundation. How ever, as the work proceeds and the rains become less frequent the ex cess water on the foundation will 'j drain to the gutters and leave the 'roadway In a condition to be rolled thoroughly before the top courses of the macadam are laid. While the foundation Is still soft and pliable (not sloppy It Is reasonable that less rolling will be required than i! the foundation was dry and hard. Conditions control in the methods employed In successful road build ' Ing, and no fixed rule can be laid down which may apply, in detail, alike for the level, dry, sandy road ways of California and conditions such as exist at this time along South Sixth street, which, aside from the Inconvenience to the eon ? tractors and hindrance to the trav eling public, are the very best for ,,the building of a perfect roadway.
