Joe Russell and children, of Grants Pass, were out on Williams creek in the automobile won by Miss Audrey in the big contest. Miss Eula Howard, of San Fran cisco, is visiting her grandma, Mrs. M. J. Johns. Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Larimore, of Upper Williams, have sold their farm to Mr. Dane. Miss Watts and Miss Provolt were horseback riding in our streets one day last week. C. 0. Bigelow and Bert Blgelow came In from the hills with a large band of cattle. Mrs. Cowan, Mrs. C. D. Blgelow, Mr. Jesse and Doll Lemon, also Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Cougle, made a fly ing trip to Grants Pass one day last week. Mrs Jeff Dixon and daughter. Gertrude, were the guest at Mrs. F. A. Toppings Sunday. We are having a nice rain and the farmers will soon be busy plowing. JEROME PRAIRIE Mrs. C. S. Morey, of Grants Pass spent a few days with Mr. Morey at their place on the Prairie. Mrs. J. C. Morgan is in town as sisting in the care of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Vineyard. Surveyors are very much In evi dence in our vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Kemp, of Grants Pass, were on the Prairie Thursday looking after their young orchard. The school library books have been received and are proving very satis factory. Forty-two new ones were added this year. Benton Burrough and W. A. George moved the steam wood saw from Rogue river to Homewood farm last week. Dr. L. R. and J. S. Hughes and family, of Seattle, have recently purchased the Varner place and are now clearing the land. Tom Faith has spent several even ings this week owl hunting and has brought in three. Mr. and Mrs. Scherz, nephews, and W. H. Parkey spent Sunday with J. W. York and family, of Missouri Flat. Mrs. Josie" Messenger and Mrs. Emma Shuck left Thursday for Los Angeles. Mrs. Shuck will spend the winter, but Mrs. Messenger will re turn home after visiting a few weeks. Mrs. Rhea Wrood and children, of Grants Pass, spent a few days with Mrs. Thorp. R. L. Coe, of Grants Pass and Mr. Shaw, of Portland, spent Sunday with Mr. Barden. John McCallister and family have returned to their home at Oakdale farm, after spending seven weeks at Tolo. Mr. Inks and family have been called to Jacksonville by the sudden death of a relative. Will Love paid New Hope a flying visit the first of the week. R. R. Thorp leaves Wednesday for a few weeks' sttay at Dry Dig gings, where he will do the assess ment work on bis claim. John Lawless and Mr. Brace have been hauling potatoes to town sev eral weeks. Clarence Wynant has returned home after spending the summer at Tolo. Last Saturday night Jean Hayes, while on his way to Oakdale farm, met a brace and had a wreck which stopped travel for some hours. Jess York, of Missouri Flats spent Sunday, October 30, with relatives. The spooks did some work in New Hope. The boys all went to bed early, but were very sleepy next day. Wonder why? W. H. Parkey, having finished putting in his fifty acres of grain, hns now taken charge of Mrs. Mes senger's farm during her absence. Rev. Clemo, of Wildersville, preached here the last Sunday in October. A large party was given at the Kirby home Hallowe'en. It was largely attended and all report a splendid time. C. R. Mcintosh and Misses La Verne and Bethel Ruble went? to Eu eene Sunday, where Mr. Mcintosh and Miss La Verne will be married at the home of the latter's parents Tuesday at 10 o'clock a. m. They will return to Golden, where they will make their home. The many friends of the young couple wish them a long and happy married life. Died At his home near Golden, Mr. Piefer, aged 70 years. The old gentlemdn was taken care of by Mr. Brower. His two sons were in Cali fornia. SUNSHINE. INCENDIARIES SET FIRE TO DEAF MUTE INSTITUTE BERKELEY, Cal., Nov. 8. The faculty of the California Deaf and, Mute Institute, assisted by the Berke- j ly police, are today endeavoring to1 learn the Identity of an alleged in-( cendiary, supposed to be one of the institute students, suspected of hav ing set fire to the Strauss hall on the the institute campus last night. Thej fire was discovered in the basement of the building when the watchman's dog, by his peculiar actions, led stud ents to a smoke-filled room.
