The trip to Crater Lake and back by team has Just been made by a lady seventy-eight years of age. Mrs. A. M. Bartoo made this very rough, steep and tiresome drive and is back'a vjst Wednesday in Medford as well as ever. The party accompanying her was com posed of her son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. G. K. Marshall, Vernon Marshall, Edison T. Marshall, Miss Jesse Hope Marshall, Miss Min nie Bartoo and Miss Pauline Bartoo. They went from here over the sixty mile drive and back by Ashland, over a route covering no nines. me road was very stony and covered many steep hills, up and down, both going and returning. They saw some deer and a few bear tracks, but no bears. It was a very enjoyable trip for all and Mrs. Bartoo stood It remarkably well for one of her years. Deer Season Opens. The hunters of Giants Pass and Josephine county are cleaning their rifles and getting ready for hunting the deer. The season opens on Aug ust 1, and promptly our hunters will take to the hills and provide them selves with a supply of venison. A number of our boys will leave Grants Pass the afternoon of the last day of July, so as to be in certain localities favored by the deer when the sport opens on the morning of August 1. Of course, there will not be as many deer killed as is expected by the hunters, as few. as a rule, are suc cessful, but all will have the experi ence and the appetite which comes from a tramp over the hills. The ap plications for hunters' licenses have become numerous at the county clerk's office and will undoubtedly Increase In numbers from now on. Poultry Netting in heights up to t feet at Cramer Bros. Within the next few months the world should not be startled if the United States government gives of ficial word that a cannon has been perfected that shoots so powerfully and so far that the heavy armament of other countries will look like mere popguns. General Fred D. Grant, who has Just arrived In New York to assume command of the department of the east, says such a gun has been per fected and is now undergoing final trials at Governor's Island. The United States. General Grants says, has had an explosive under cov er for a number of years which, if fired from a gun strong enough to withstand the tremendous pressure, would do the damage now done by a tlozen ordinary 12-Inchers. They commenced at McFadden's place, haling Mr. Far ra's crop of oat hay at that place and from there will go down the Applegate valley. Mr. Longwell, who recently pur chased the Huntington quartz mill which was stored at V. S. Bailey's, Is moving it to his quartz claim up on Whiskey gulch this week. Dr. Lough ridge came out in his j auto Monday night to W. S. Bailey's where he was summoned in attend ance to Grandma Hathaway, who was quite ill.
