SOCIAL EVENTS A swell little dancing party was given by the high school pupils last Friday evening at the Coliseum rink, j at which about 150 Invited guests j were present. The Dean orchestra' furnished excellent music and the Jolly good tima which followed was ; thoroughly enjoyed by everyone pres-j ent. The High school pupils are to I be congratulated on the success of their dancing parties and when you ! go once you are sure to want to. go again. This Is proof positive of the popularity they have obtained. FRIDAY, OCTOnKU 22, 1909. CLEARING, FRUIT PLANTING. The amount of clearing to be done In this county during the next tlx months will exceed that of any two years In the past. Not only will there bo a very large acreage clear ed but It will all bo put under cul tivation. A considerable amount will be sown to alfalfa but a much larger acreage will be sot to appleH, pears, peaches and grapes. The many new men who have purchased land In this county during the past few months are all preparing to plant orchards or vineyards. It has been estimated that 10,000 acres will be planted to fruit tho coming Ben son. This estimate is under, rather than over, the mark. Miss Anna Iluber was tendered a very delightful birthday party at the home of her sister, Mrs. A. Glgler, on last Friday evening. The event was a complete surprise. On going home at 8:30 Miss Iluber found the house In darkness and not until she was fairly In the midst of the Jolly throng were the lights turned on and she found herself surrounded by about 20 of her young friends. After she had somewhat recovered from her surprise she was delighted to see that her friends had remem bered her with many beautiful birth day presents. Refreshments of nuts and fruits were served and it was at a late hour that the young people departed for home, with many good wishes for their hostess and many ex pressions of delight for the pleasant evening spent. OREGON'S LOST OPPORTUNITY Under the above head the Medford Tribune prints the following odltorla which contains much of real merit: "One cannot read of President Taft's travels without realizing Ore gon's Inefficiency In securing public attention. "All Taft saw of Oregon was two days of Portland and a surfeit of Portland's peanut politicians, "Oregon missed a fine opportunity to advertise herself and to acquaint tho world with her natural resources, and to secure tho president's co operation in developing these re sources but what could bo expected whon Oregon's leading men are Ig norant of Oregon themselves? "Oregon Is perpetually missing theBO opportunities." Tho Tribune is Just right, only this can be udded: Tho Rogue River Valley In Its full length and entirety should stand together and when any thing like a president's visit is an nounced we should bo In tho swim and see to it that our part of the State of Oregon gets Its fair Bhare Of advertising out of such occasion. There are many things that will come our way us soon as we are united and commenco working to gether. Let us not blame other peo ple ns long Ha we nre not doing any thing ourselves. Put awny petty jealousies and local differences and stand together for our part of the great statu of Oregon. Hurvcylng the Ontvlty Ditch. Englnoer-ln-Chlof Hall has been Xor nearly two weeks engaged on the Btirvey of the gravity ditch. The greatest care Is being used to get through tho city without damage to streets or private property there fore it Is taking time to mako the survey. To get satisfactory results It will require tho best efforts along engineering lines, and tho directors of tho company feel certain that Mr. Hall will do tho work In a high ly satisfactory manner. On returning to her home at about 8:30 Tuesday evening, Mrs. Andy McCarthy was greeted by a house full of friends whoso coming was a com plete surprise to her. This,' how ever, did no interfere with the splen did time which followed, as the evenlni; was spent with cards, music and games. The game of "Manners" was played and It was surprising to note what fine mnnners some of those present had, especially in cases of husband and wife. The game of "Who" wa3 also Indulged In and proved to be more interesting than a band of gypsy fortune tellers. Light refreshments were served and at about 12 o'clock all departed for home, wishing for another party Just as jolly ns this one. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roper, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wright, Mr. and Mrs. John Couslno, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Graham, Mr. and Mrs. Minor, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Champlaln, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Smith; Misses Vernio Champlaln and Gladys Couslno; Garrett Atchison, and Mrs. Andy McCarthy. A pleasant Hallowe'en at homo on Friday, October 29 is anticipated by tho ladles aid of the Baptist hurch and their husbands, when Dr. and Mrs. Leslie will entertain at their residence. at Hair- nvlng Contract Soon to Be Made.
