The late R. D. Hume, who was nractlcally dictator with the Dowers of king at the mouth of Rogue river, left much less property than was supposed at the time of his death. The appraisement of bis holdings amounts to $378,000 and against this are debts amounting to $146,- 000. By some means Hume got hold of the land on either side of the Rogue river for a distance of 12 miles from its mouth and by this means he shut out all other fisher men from the salmon grounds. He acquired these lands during those days when It was easy to get title and when no questions were asked. Of the 14,000 acres of land, 5000 to 6000 is valuable for timber, the remainder is productive only of grass for sheep; it is non-agricultural. Yet It may prove Immensely valuable because It extends up each side of the Kogue river from its mouth for 12 miles and runs also seven miles north of the mouth of the Rogun along the ocean beach, without, it Is said, a break at any place. Herein lay Its value to Hume. 15y tying up the river banks he hoped to keep off salmon invaders, and succeeded. When he died men began to ask by what riht Hume had held ex clusive possession of the Rogue sal mon grounds. The Rogue Is a navi gable stream, a third of a mile wide at Its mouth, with 14 feet of water on its bar at high tide. It was real ized that anyone bad a right to come In from the ocean and seine. But all the frontage on both sides from the Pacific to beyond the fishing dis trict was every foot held by the sal mon king's estate, which could for bid landings or trespassX in short, whore the county road came to the river would afford the only ingress except from the ocean. Owing to the non-arrival of the Sunday school literature for the next quarter there was no Sunday school last Sunday. A surprise party was given Amos Williams last Saturday evening which was much enjoyed by those present. We learn that Miss Linnie Perry, dauehter of O. H. Perry, of this place, was recently married at Sup erior, Wis. Miss Perry's many friends of Murphy extend heartiest congratulations. OA LICK. It looks like fall has started In as we are having some cold rains. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Barlow returned home after a month's visit to Bell Ingham, Wash., and also to the Se attle fair. They report a good time. Bill Ilustln made a flying business trip to the Pass court week. J. L. Mattison, of the Oriole, made a trip to the Pass on business last Saturday. He is pushing work on the mine. Bill Fruit has returned to Gallce after a two weeks' visit to his old home In Hlllsboro, Ore. He reports that he Is now a married man, but there Is no evidence to prove It. Lee Crow and Jack Draubough re turned from their trip from the coast. They came back by the way of Crescent City and Grants Pass. They report having a good time. The Wedge Is Installing new ma chinery and will have It in operation soon. The prospects for a paying mine are good. Mr. and Mrs Smith, of Applegate, are visiting their son, Ike Smith. Frank Mitchell has returned after a trip of a month's duration, during which time he enjoyed his honey moon. Ills wife, being very sick, was unable to come home with him. RED WING. Hill, who was In Chicago last Monday, said to a newspaper reporter that he Intended to continue his progressive policy In pushing railroad construction along the lines In the west and northwest Inaugur ated during Ilarrlman's lifetime, lie was not (Jlsposed to go Into particu lars but did say: "We Intend to build all the lines that are warranted by the develop ment of the country in the North west, and possibly some which are not warranted by present develop ment. Yes, we are going to build a line south In the center of the state of Oregon from a point on the Col umbia river. I cannot tell you how far we will go with that line. It de pends upon conditions." "Is It not true that you are head ing for San Francisco?" was asked. "Oh, no. Mr. A. H. Carson, in company with a gentleman from Omaha, was' In town Sunday looking at real estate. John Mackln started Monday for Seattle to visit the fair. The section crew escaped from what might have been a serious ac cident last Friday. They were on their way home from work when their car was run Into by the Shasta Limited, which was late. The men stayed with the car until they saw they could not save it, then jumped. The car was smashed into pieces, but no one was hurt. W. Klum finished repairing his mining dam on Wolf Creek this week In preparation for the winter's run at his placer mine. Mr. Anderson, who Is interested in the Vindicator mine, arrived in Leland the first of the week. Rev. W. C. Long preached morn ing and evening last Sunday to a good-sized congregation.
