There are still repeated rumors that the chief of the Forest Service, Glfford Pinchot, will resign, but these rumors are each time promptly denied by his friends. It begins to look as if there Is some truth In the report, on the principle where there Is so much smoke there must be some fire. The country will come to the conclusion that Secretary Hal linger is making things disagreeable for Mr. Pinchot, so as to drive him into resigning. The Secretary is on the wrong side of this controversy and if he goes farther it will look as if ho is favoring the corporations who have been making war on the Forest Service. The latest report to tome from Washington is dated the ! i'Cth and is as follows: It is rumored around Washington tenight that Clifford Pinchot, chief of the Forest Service, because of the interference with his administration by Secretary of the Interior Hal linger and Secretary of Agriculture Wilson, intends to resign and get out. The rumor lacks confirmation, huts appears to be given color by reason of the fact that Pinchot, for more than a month has neglected his Government work In order to collaborate with ex-Secretary Gar field In writing a history of the Roosevelt administration, and fur ther because Pinchot is known to be deeply disheartened by reason of the attitude assumed by President Taft and his cabinet toward the forestry and conservation propagandas. Pinchot's closest friends declare he will not resign, but will fight all who oppose htm. , Should Pinchot be driven to send ing in his resignation some ugly i criticisms will bo made regarding l the policy of the Secretary of the In itorior.
