It la the men of Ideas who rule the industrial world and build up communities. It Ih the ideas of these men that give prosperity to states, counties nnd rifles, but there Ih nnotlier class who are quite as Im portant and these are (lie men who discern flic ideas and know bow to put them into use. There Is still an other class who, are always to be found working against the two men tioned and these are Known In vul gar parlance as Knockers. The force and eneruy of this class Is by no means to be despised. Theirs Is a 'negative force, f 1H true, bill they have the power often to hlluht whole communities. One would think that when they nee they have been mistaken they would get Into the band wagon and proclaim the glory of the coming army of pro gress which is doing the world's work, but nothing of the kind. Beat en in one point they soon find an other place to block the wheels of progress and ply their damnable HVOcatlon. Will We ever get lid of this class? They are like political office holders; they seldom die and never resign; and so we must lie con lent and lie,tliankfnl that once in a while one of the fraternity moves away, or becomes convinced and Joins the builders of emplve. God works In wnyH that are wonderful and cronies many animate things the beauty or usefulness of which It Is hard to discern, but of nil these none are more puzzling to us than the "knocker." ALL YEAR AROUND SCHOOLS. Chicago Is to have "all the yenr around" hcIiooIs for those who desire such opportunities. It Is reported that 10,000 children are now attend ing the summer schools of that city. This Is a step of the behest Import ance for those who have a desire to complete their educational term In less time than Is required under the old system. The Idea has been that the scholar's health demanded a vacation of two or three months and while this Is necessary n SIimll percentage ,,f eases, It should not apply to nil. I he nieiiihciw of the Grunts Pas Commercial Club heartily endorse THE TWO HORSE BRAND I the Dronosltlon for the county to build the Gallce bridge, as It will assist In the development of the mines which In turn will Increase the assessed valuation of the district half a million dollars annually for many years to come. This will be a good Investment for the county and there should he no hesitation in un dertaking the work. Good roads and good bridges are valuable as sets for county officials to show to taxpayers. MEDFORD'S IDLETALK. For advertising purposes a story has been started In Medford that Southern Oregon favors secession from the northern part of the state and the creation of a new common wealth out of Southern Oregon and a strip of Northern California. The reason given Is that the Willamette Valley did by Its vote In the legisla ture, Kill the normal school at Ash land, and, after allowing Medford to get through an appropriation for the Crater Lake road, they permit a Salem lawyer to block the appropri ation. This Is primary school boy talk and the originators of If can make more money pumping thunder at, thre" cents a (lap than they are likely to make out of this. We hope the name of the Rogue River valley, which me.'iri't Grants Pass, is not claimed by the seccessionlsts. Tills valb y Is loyal to the whole state and lis glorious traditions nnd if there be any who feel that they do not like to stav with Oregon they have the privilege of withdrawing themselves from these parts. They will never be missed. 4 4 4 LOCAL ITFMS 4 .Misses Ada and Annie Smith left Thursday evening for a month's visit w ith relatives at Portland. Mrs. !. L. Satcbwell left Wednes day evening for Portland, called there by the serious Illness of Mr. Satchwell's mot her. Misses Clara Cramer and Hazel Ktiykendall arrived here Thursday from RoKcburg to visit, with Miss Hessie Davis. Read the Ashland Commercial Col lege display ail and secure a nine months scholarship beginning Sep tember. 7-30-4t Mrs. Alice Carlon returned Thurs day from Portland and Roseburg, where she has spent the past three weeks visit Inn with relatives nnd friends. Ralph Davis returned Thursday from his vacation trip which he spent at Roseburg and other northern points and will again resume his du ties at the S. P. depot. Mrs. U. L. Dlshrow started Monday evening for Victoria, II. C, to ho at the bedside of her son, Stunrt, who Is seriously 111 with typhoid fever. Stuart went to Victoria shortly be fore the Fourth. K. .1. Plain and W. R. Lootnls, from Redfleld, S. D., arrived here Tuesday for n few days' visit with the families of fl. D. Carner and S. II. Rlggs, nnd also to look over the city and surrounding country. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Quite a large number were present and Judg ing from the sounds of mirth and good cheer, the evening was without doubt a most enjoyable one. Miss Dessle Cole entetralned in honor of Miss Stella Cane Wednesday evening from 7 to 10 o'clock, the en tertainment being in the form of a picnic at the White Rocks. Twenty four young people were present to nartake of the generous hospitality of Miss Cole and join In the merry making. A sumptuous repast was served and partaken of with keen rel- sh after which the young people gave themselves up to the enjoy ment of the occasion, the only regret being the near departure of Miss j Kane for her home in California, ! she and her mother, Mrs. L. M. Kane, ! caving for San Francisco this Friday j evening. I Mrs. Ceo. Riddle and Mrs. .1. II. ! Hathaway accompanied the members of I heir Sunday s'hool classes on a , picnic excursion to the Riversi 1 park Tuesday evening. There were about 11! of the young people in tit-1 tendance and everyone enjoyed th" event, immensely. Supper was served in the cool shade by the riverside, and after engaging In Karnes and other pastimes, they returned to their homes at a seasonable hour. A party consisting of between 1 2 and 14 people left tills city last Sun day by carriages for Hugo to visit Mr. and Mrs. Randolph and enjoy a picnic In the shady woods adjoining that village. The party departed from Grants I'ass at fi::Si a. m., and after enjoying the day at Hugo and eating dinner in the woods, returned to their homes ben.' about 11 p. rn., having thoroughly enjoyed the out ing and wishing for many more just like it In the near future. A delightful little informal picnic was given In honor of Miss Florence Morris In the park across Rogue river Saturday evening. There were 12 young ladles present and Mrs. C. P. Bishop acted as chaperone, The evening was pleasantly spent by the girls in spite of the fact that the sterner sex were conspicuous by their absence. A dainty lunch was served and the gasoline launch was pressed Into service and Miss Morris will al ways hnve a pleasant remembrance of the event held In her honor on the bunks of old Rogue. Mrs. Brook's class of the Christian church held a very pleasant little picnic, near the White Rocks Thurs day afternoon of last week. The young folks were taken to the White Rocks from the bridge In the gaso line launch and .then wended their way to a cool, shady nook on the bank of the Rogue and pnrtook of a sumptuous lunch, and after a Jolly good time spent along the river, the party returned to the launch and were brought hack to the bridge, where they departed for their sever al hollies. Wednesday afternoon and even ing the members of the National Pro tective Legion dispensed with busi ness cares and went In body with well-filled lunch baskets to the shady grove on North Eighth street where they gave themselves up to the de lights of the outdoor sports t-a a man ner not soon to be forgotten by those participating. There were about 75 present and both young and old Join ed In the sports with a zest which left no doubt as to the genuine plea sure derived. The ladles, however, positively refused to take part In a game of baseball against the "scrub men's team" as they beat them so badly the last time they played, they were thoroughly disgusted and told the gentlemen they would have to work up a swifter team before they J would again cross bats with them, j In the evening the grounds were beautifully illuminated with Chinese lanterns and the good time continued until late in the evening.
