THE NEW CITY ADMINISTRATION The newly Inaugurated city ad ministration will receive a hearty welcome from all who favor making Grants Pans a prosperous and thor oughly progressive municipality. In asmuch aa all the successful candi dates, the mayor and council, ran on- a progressive ticket, pledged to business-like methods, we may expect an up-to-date municipal government. There will be many demands on this administration but it is safe to say that everyone of these will be met In a buslnes-like way. Street paving, sewer construc tion anu the stamping out of nuls ances including the unlawful sale of Intoxicating liquors, no matter under what name they are vended, will all come up for action. These are only a part of the demands the majority of the voters will muke on the new city officials. We think It safe to predict that the men who were chosen at the late election will not be found wanting when they are tried In tbe balance. Grants Pass must not only be a progressive but a clean town from whatever standpoint it may be Judged. It will be In order for the city government to In every way possible assist In the upbuilding of Grants Pass; In short whatever may ' advance our business Interests or In rrease the prosperity of the city as a center of population that we have faith to believe will receive attention at the hands of the new admlnlstra tlon. 1 !!'. . in.. . n . . ' A TIMELY SUBJECT, i. An article taken from the Satur day Evening Post on tbe apple Is printed on the Oral page of this Is sue. This story of the most popu lar fruit grown In the United States should be carefully read by everyone Interested In this Important subject, that Is la the cultivation of the ap ple for profit. Grants Pass Is the center of a vast territory which It Is admitted will grow to perfection more kinds of fruit than any other part of the Pacific, coast. This Is the testimony of the most experien ced fruit growers who have Investi gated the subject. There exists conditions In this' part of Rogue River Valley which make It the Ideal place for the growing of the apple. The soil and climate In combination with the bright euriahlue, give alio, color and flavor, producing a fruit that has never been equaled In any other part of the world. The Interesting and highly Im portant article referred to points out the present difficulty of growing ap ples In many of the states which have heretofore been large producers and glvea the facta as to the uniform auccesa which baa rewarded tbe Northwest. The article will greatly encourage those who last year plant ed large apple orchards In this couuty. Tbla business Is without doubt, when well managed, highly profitable aad those who have the moans, the knowledge and a delre to follow the occupation of an or rhardlst around Grants Pas. itay feel reasonably certain of suecesa. money at home and add It to the wealth of our farmers. Again irrigation will develop here a creamery and a cheese factory which will add largely to the pros perity of our farmers and will make this the supply point for these im portant articles of commerce. The Increase of farm productions through Irrigation will make Grants Pass and other railroad towns in thl. county shipping points for every com modity produced on the farm, aud through this means great wealth will be added to the farms under our Ir rigating system. Irrigation will more than double the production of our orchards and vineyards and will render these Im portant Industries successful each and every year to come. In the plantng of new orchards and vine yards Irrigation will Insure the bring them to the bearing period and bring them to the bearing period much sooner than without if. Irrigation It the only deiendance of the small fruit grower. Straw berries, raspberries and blackberries, with all their numerous varieties can only be successfully grown by the use of water. These fruits are very prof itable for shipping, and under Irri gation this could be made a noted place for the cultivation of small fruits. The Courier realizes these are timely topics, now that Irrigation Is In sight and Interested parties should and doubtless will get ready to rev olutionize methods on the farm, In the orchard and vineyard as well as in the garden.
