Leigh, of Kerby, one of the mining men on Silver creek, was in the county seat last Monday. Miss Myra Montgomery returned home Monday from Glendale where she had been visiting frieuds. F. F.Johnson of the Layton went over to Happy Camp Wednesday to look after mining interests. The Takilma Smelter is shipping about three can of matte a week oat of Grants Pass at this time. Miss Maggie Veatoh retnrned to her home at Eogene, Monday, after a two month's visit with friends here. Ira Binns, now employed in Rus sell's confectionery at Medord. spent Sunday here with parents andriends. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Paddock are enjoying a visit with their daughter, Miss Mamie, who came np from San Francisco the latter part of last week. A. J. Bingham of Portlaud. a brother of Mrs. Herbert Smith, was in the city Sunday in attendance at the funeral of his littlenephew, James Smith. Mrs. A. B. Cornell and son Carroll, returned home Monday from Galice, where they bad been spending a couple of weeks with the family of J. C. Mattison. J.Mrs. C. B. Hunt of Lievermore, Iowa ia in tbe city, the guest of old friends, Mr. and Mrs. G H. Demaray. Mr. Hunt will also be here shortly and the family will enjoy a vacation in the Oregon bills. Miss Mozelle Hair is bom from Engene where she haa been in attend ance at the State Universitv. from which institution she graduated this year. C. E. Palmer has entered the mercantile business on hit own ac count at . Wimer for which place be left Wednesday. Mr. Palmer has for some time been identified with the Southern Oregon Supply Co. Dr. M. 0. Findley has just changed his address from London to Vienna, here he will remain several weeks. The doctor reports a very successful and pleasant stay. He expects to re turn borne in September via Florence, Naples, Rome and the Meditteranean. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Voorbies and son retnrned home Monday morning. Mrt. Voorhies had been visiting rela tives at Greenville, Mich, since last November and Mr. Voorhies went to Portland last Friday to meet her and their son Earle. Mr. and Mrs. Friok O. Meeker, who recently came down from Portland and purchased a farm nine miles out from Grunts Pass on the Oregon and California stase road, were in the city Monday to do some trading. They are both greatly taken with the Rncnn River vallev country and Its climate. Dr. E. P. Dixon, R. L. Coe, H. C. Rnh7in and C. L. Clevenger left here Wednesday morning in Dr. nirnn'a tanrin? car for Portland oo a 10 days pleaiure trip. They will attend the Cherry Fair at Salem, and also stop off at Dundee and Newberg to investigate the English walnut crop. Dr. Dixon has a walnut orchard at the latter place. They expect to be absent about 10 days. Mayor Reddy, of Medford, Colonel Ray of New York, Dr. Ray and District Attorney A. E. Reames of this city, were viewing the right of way for tbe proposed electrio"ralway It is thomeht tbat the line will pass through Central Peint. Medford and Jacksonville, thence to Applegate, Buncom an Ashland. The line will reach tidewater at some point near here, although it is not definitely known. Jacksonville Poet. Rev. Robt. McLean, who has been recalled to the pastorate of tbe Bethany Presbyterian church of this oity, arrived here from Portland Tuesday morning. Dr. McLean was castor of the Grants Pass cbnreh about 10 years ago and went from here to Portland. For the past five years be has had charge of the educational , work of the Presbyterian church in Porto Rico. D. Young went np to Phoenix yesterday to spend a day with her parents. Mrs. Maggie Taylor and sister, of Wimer, were in the county seat the fore part of the week. Mrs. J. C. K. McCann, postmistress at Wilderville, left yesterday for an extended visit with re'atives and old friends in Tennessee and North Caro lina. - John Tellerow of Fort Jones, Cal., returned home yesterday morning after having spent a week with his brother, Sam, over on Williams Creek. John owns valuable mining property at Fort Jones. Rev. Newnan of Fruitdale who has ; been ill for some time and recently came to Oregon to reouperate' waa stricken with paralvsis one day last week and is now at the Sooth Pacific hospital in this city. H. L. Herzinger was called to Red ding, Cal. Monday by the death of his mother, who passed away Satur day. He waB accompaaiel by his niece, Mrs. Claude Clienoweth. The deceased was 76 years of age. B Mrs. Joe Russell and children and a niece, Miss Fern Casino of Crescent City, went out to Henry York's last Tuesday where they will camp for month. Meantime the sheriff is rul ing the roost to suit himself. J. W. Moore, manager of the Model drug store, left the latter pat of last week for the Willamette valley where he will visit several days, including his former home at Portland and Woodbiro. His place daring his ab- senoe will be filled by F. r. tier- man. Frank Mashbnrn of the Golden Rule store and Mrs. Mashbura left Wednesday for the east, where Mr. Mashburn will buy a new stock of goods for the fall and winter trade. They will visit Chicago, St. Lewis and New York city. L. F. Oilman, president of the Oilman Bed Rock 'Mining Co., went to Sacramento, Cel., Monday, to look over the machine being erected for the company at their iron works there and to superintend its loading. Dye and wife who have for nine years been missionaries in Afrioa will be in Grants Pass, Wednesday, July 15 and they are to speak at the Christian cbnreh, Wed nesday evening, July 15. They come with a remarkable message. It is no idle tale; they come te tell, but a wonderful story of a wonderful power that comes from the gospel of Jesu Christ. These missionaries have built up on the banks of tbe Congo a church of 1000 members, every tenth man of which is a missionary to his fellows.
