The gene'al busioess of Ibis as well as (ill other parts of the country are looking to the automobile as the mode of quick transportation as well as for tbe pleasure derived in going through the bills and val'eys and en joying tbe progress made not only in the improvement of tbe roads, bnt the general appearance of life and bustle among our farmers and fruit growers, and the fact that you are iu a good machine and can see what is being done and enjoy tbronghly the pleasures of tiring and being in a com munity that is op to date la all re spects to tbe time and anticipating the tmpovements to make this our portion of the state looked to by all as the section most desirable at the progressive and pleasure loving pub lic. R. ti. Wilson the Southern Oregon agent for tbe Tourist, has recently made a trip to Roseburg 100 miles north, over the worst roads of tbe en tire southern part of the state and making the trip in eight boars of running time gives an idea of what can be done with a car of this kind and the usefulness of a oar as the only way to see tbe country as well as tbe economy of time. Our old friend E. C. Dixon and wife are on their return from a sight seeing trip of the entire southern section of the ooast making a Ave months trip in a 24 horse power Tourist and are expected here the latter part of this week, also Benty F. PORTLAND OR ! As indicative of the fact that Oraost Pass and Josephine coonty enjoy all the confort aud luxory of automobiling the following sketch from Mr. Olding! garage and Roy Wilson, who sells gasoline gigs in Orants Pass are ample proof. Mr. Olding says: The horse ao looger can snaintain the stream of progress in Josephine county. His place is being usurped by the automobile. Daring the pa.t iu weeks oo less than 14 new touring cars have been brought to Ornats Pass. Mxwells, Cadillacs, Tooristi ana Wintons bold the sway. Those who pasi the local garage and livery of T. B. Olding who sells Mawxells throughout Suotliern Oregon, are im pressed with the appearance of a larg oity. From 7 in the morning until near midnight tbe hustle and thrill about his place of busine-s shows that there is "much doing" in the valley of tbe Rogue. Two livery cars are flying hither and thither at any hour while tho "Honk I Honk I" of some impatient driver calling for gasoline, lubricating oil, or almost any piece of equipment from a spark plug to a llmoreaine, body proves to you that Oldings advent in Grants Pass brought a new live wire to town. Faw people realize what a great credit a good automobile garage is to our town. It stands in the tame re lation that does a good hotel. Two travelers touring between Los Angeles and Portland meet at Frisco and tbe south bound one tells the other "be sure to male your night stop at Orants Pas. You'll find better hospitality and better accommodations there than elsewhere ou the read. " It begins to look as if we bad caught a breath of the modern spirit in town. One day out glides a silent running, two-cy Un der Maxwell with Olding at the wheel and later, back comes tbe incor poration papers for our big new ir nagtion ditch. Heavens I bow tbe eyes of the traditional yet living mossback do bulge. Another turn, a strange, yet familiar "Hook," and op drives H A Hover in a kindred Mxxwell on his way from Mexico, a four years trip around tbe world. Trunks, grips, tropic water bag, tent, a spring and shock absorber every known improvement attached lo one oar, that car to visit Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Egypt, Palestine. and Orants Pass, helped that traveler along She showed that world tourist geuuiue hospitality and that bospi tality will be heard around tbe world Another car glides a ay and a candl date for the United States senate oomes back in it saying that Grants Pass will get a seaport terminal freight rate if I ever work iu Washington. What do these things? Tired and abused hor.es with camel humied backs or frames ready to put meat on? No; a modern, elegant, silent runulng motor car that economy and bosiness sense teach as to use for both business and pleasure. Our mountain scenery with .tt'e swinging, sloping, wiudiug roads through passes and canyons, by rivers and lakes, over mountains or across boulevards stretches of valley orchard districts all go to euchaut the home seeker, the pleasure-seeker or the promoter. Our own citit-u, with their many curs for themselves and for their friends, will gain a knowlegde of the country that will sen a intelligence to the waiting public When will the trolley linos and the railroad come? They will hurry along wbeu you send some investor in yoor new car aloug the railroad right of way to Cresoeut City, or up Williams Creek to the oaves, or to the mines dowu Rogue River. Get in the Cadil lac car with the Williams stage driver and see how much more smoothly. 'quickly and silently the mail is de livered, the passeuger carried an 1 j tbe baggage transported. The Cadil- lac car uses one-half of the time the puutiug team was wont to require. Get in the Cadillac with Doctor Smith, when tiie telephone call him ; to a distant couutry home. There is no stork iu America can beat that ' car. Let the aurrouuding towns sit np ' and know that Grants Pass is swiftly ! eclipsing her sister settlements; that ! she Is moving with a speed consistent with the progress necessary to handle her growing oroiie to market tbe ava 1 lauchs of fruit sure to drop upon as in t two more years, to bring to towu her ; waiting forests aud build ships'and warehouses to accommodate the exit '. of Oregon's export oommerce. Tbe city of Grants Paas extends to Olding siucere thanks for the gap he filled in our transportation facilities. Will Auto Through Callfornls.l Mr. and Mrs. Ben Rogers and Mrs. nor'. hmthr and Frank Jordan of rviftaoe Grove, came over from Wolf Creek, Sunday in Mr. Roger a new tourist auto The running time for Wolf Creek, 20 miles, was one boor aud3 S minotes, which considering the three mountains crossed and tho coa ditlou of the roads, was good time. Mr and Mrs. Rollers expect soon to take an auto trip through Oregon and California during the summer and following winter. Mr. Rogers will give op his work as lineman and operator for the Postal Telegraph Co. at Wolf Creek, the first or tne momn.
