T. Tajlor has issued a call for bounty warrants, covering the period from June 25, 1904 to July 15, 190. Th- interest on these warroats will stop from the date of call. Friday, November 29, 1907. In sieaking of the matter, Treasurer Taylor took occasion to remark to the Courier's coort reporter that although hi has considerable more money in his keeuins than was necepaary to pay off these specifi d outstanding d' bt. yet the people probably did not know that this money belonged to niher rjarties. whose warrants had been called, but who, for reasons bet ter known to themselves, prefurred to leave the cush in the costody of the county. He told of one mau, in par t'colar, who has considerable money thas tied op and it has been called for two years. Finally Mr. Taylor called his attention to the notice, thinking that possibly he did not ie the notice in the newspapers. The party replied that he saw the notice, but that he would rather leave the money in the county treasury than draw it out. When Treasurer Taylor inquired why he did not draw it out and purchase other warrants and thus have it earning more interest, he remarked that he had a deal on and wanted the money where he could lay his hands on it, in case be should need it in a hurry. Should too many people take to doing this, it would mean that Mr. Taylor's duties would become much greater than those he is supposed to have on his hands. How ever, he hardly expects that many people will be wanting to hoard up their cash after auy such fashion. Many Bidder a.r Interested. Judge Stephen Jewell is a pretty busy man these days and one of the matters that is engaging much of bU time and attentioa is iu looking after the correspondence relative to the proposed building of a new bridge over tbe Rogue River, here at Grants Pass. He has letters in almost every mail from interested bidders, all over the state. As a general thing they want copies of the plans and specifica tions, but inasmuch as there ia but one set and these have oot the county $.')0 he does not feel at liberty to e.;d them around the county. So he has to do the next best thing, which is to give each contractor all the information he oan regarding the matter. The bids are all to be in by January 2, 1908 and then the couniy oomuiianiouers will decide whether or not the oouuty taxpayers will be re quested to have the levy made for the erection of said structure. Thus far the sentiment seems to very generally favvr the project and this is especially true, when it concerns people who use the bridge in making their trips to the county sunt. Holiday Causing More Bother. Those holidays are still in force and they are causing no end of trouble aud confusion at the court house. This week the county commissioners met ou Wednesday, fully eiKTting to transact uiuuh important business but they fouud that tbe Goveinor's edict would prevent them from doing anything much. They did niimagt to pass upon a few labor bills that were OQtatinding against the county, but aside from these, they found that it would be too much of a risk to trans act much other business. Oue im portant matter that was to have been looked after, was tbe orderiug of the publication of the delinquent tax list, as required by law. Dut, a, matters now stand this will have to be laid over until either the holidays cease or the state legislature convenes aud makes proper piovieious for such matters. The members of the board are as auxious as anyone else cau pos sibly be to clean np the volume of busiuess that has beeu accumulating right along since the holidays were proclaimed. Lumber Companies in Squabble. Several months ago the Sugar Pine Door A Lumber Co., instituted pro- feedings at law against the Williams ( Pros. Door A Lumber Co., in the I circuit court, claiming that the sum 'off 1000 was due it, by reason of a Idivideudof fSOOO, which it claimed th said company had declared, and i inasmuch as the iSugar Piue people ! claimed to hold one-half ot the Wil liams Bros. After Mora Recreant Husband. Another oase of alleged wife deser tion has been engaging the attention of th oonnty . oourt, whicQ met, with Jadge Stephen Jewell, acting Judge, E. S. Van Dyke, depnty prosecuting attorney, S. F. Cheshire, clerk and W. J. Russell, as sheriff. The complaint was madej against Albert V. Schmitt. who resides near Selma. It was alleged that tbe had left bis wife and ohidren, without just or sufficient cause. A bench warrant was issued, requiring the accused man to appear and explain matters. He, was to come either be fore Judge Jewell or before any mag istrate in tbe oouuty. Later on Schmitt patched matters up and it is understood that the trouble has now blown over. One of the least expensive and most substantial of telford roads In the Unit ed States is said to be the St. George highway, in Knox county. Me. It is eighteen feet In width, thoroughly drained and cost only 50 cents per foot, or $2,040 per lineal mile. This low cost was possible because stones of sultnble size for tbe lower courses were beside the road and granite chips were hud for the mere hauling from the grout heaps of quarries close by the road. A description of this road says that its gutters carry awuy every drop of water. Tbe lower course of the bed is of stones of varying sizes, none so big that a man could not alone handle each, and they were so placed as to tend to bind themselves together, al though tbey were fitted together rathei roughly. Smaller pieces were then fitted into the crevices of this lower layer. With long handled hammers men went over this and broke up any bits which were too large. On these were spread gruulte chips from the refuse heaps of the adjoining quarry.
