I note a wide difference of opinion as to the proper way to make roads and streets with broken rock. At this class of work if one part of my study and exjierience, I take note of all opinions suggested, snd will offer a few points on the subject First, I believe there is only one way to build macadam roadt or streets and that It the right way, which is as certained by the past experience of bulldiog this class of street and loads in different oliuiatea, and on differ ent kinds of grounds, also the kind of rock usod. As a subject we will .suppose we are Improving a street in this town. The first to take in consideration is the climatic conditions aud what is the best material for foundation in this climate. We have seven months dry road bed, and about four months that the water Hits the ground to the surface, we have no subsoils or hard pan, so that evidently the only founda tion lays directly on the top or sur face, and is made by the sun baking the top dirt. To make a street of tliis material or foundation, we most have good gutters on each side at least two feet lower than the center of treet with miter drains crossing the streets at short distances, as we must depend wholly on drainage to hold the fouudatior, for the sou will not dry the ground after the rock is in place. The next of importance, is the prop er shape of the foundation to wear to the best advantage. The street should have jusc enough convexity to throw the water off aud not too convex a surface, forming a flat surface at the center. I have seen several streets that would have been first-class, only (or this defect. An arc of a circle is often used but I believe a curve more couvex at the sides Is best. The raisd from the sides to the center need not exceed ouo in 40 of the widtli and ono in 00 is am 1 le in dryor climates. Hut this work of shaping the grouud must lie done proierly before any rock is placed. The rock should be placed uutil a thickness of 10 inches of lucked rock is in place. This is best put on iu two layers say six inches first, aud then four aud raking by hand is the best way to disritbute the rok to evenness. This should be con tinued as long as the rolliug is being none, there should be very small amount of grouting or filling placed with the reck, iu fact, it has been thoroughly demonstrated that the rock from a crusher of tho sizes that will puss through a two-inch ring down to a ring is the best to make solid roads. The road should be rolled until no movement can be (eeu in the rock as the roller passes over them, and for the first six mouths all places t lint show defect by sinking more rock should be placed at once. The roller should have not less than two-weight per square foot of ground surface, and three tons would be better. If the above lules are followed all that remains to determine the length of time the street Will last is the kind of rock used. The best rock for the purKsu is that which baa the hard uess, toughness, and ability to resist the action of the weather and those qualities are not always found iu the same rock. Certaiu bard lime stones are the best as the dust forms a cementing material aud makes the road Hirfct. liut for streets that huvn heavy tratlle, ayauite, lutsalta, greenstone, uart.nue, grits, and chirty wiudstotiea.will answer tho pur Kise very well. For the coellicieiit ol wear and crushing qualities of the alsivu uumed rocki quarto is best if fairly pure, next comes syamto and the thorites, limestone and granite. The wear of a street made of syenite should not be over Inch of depth ier year in this climate under heavy trallin Very little water should lie used on the road, aud sweeping should be done to keep it clean.
