THE SCH00LS0F JOSEPHINE Superintendent Savasla rinds Them In Good Shape. Coonty Soperintenrlent Lincoln Sarago baa been putting in consider able time of late visiting schools be fore they ahonld close for the holiday vacation. He found the average efficiency of the aclioola rial ted of a higher degree tliao for laat year. Tbe attendance U larger and the bet termeut of the icbool bouaca, out building! and grounds is noticeable ai is the increase in apiaratos and books in the libraries. That tie schools of Josephine conuly are keep ing pace with the general advance ment of the couoty is a matter that givea encouragement to all progriipx- ire citizens for the standard of the pobllo schools reflect accurately the atandard of intelligence, culture and publio Rpirit of a community. While Joapehine oounty is In reality, a newly settled section, yet the schools of the county will compare favorably with those of the more populous und wealthy counties of the fat to. Of tbe schools viaitcd, Supt. avugr found at the Jones Creek district the achools iu good shape with an enroll ment of 18 and Miaa Myrtle Kenahaw as teacher. The school haa a aomll library of well selected hooka and fairly good apparatus. A new stove ia needed aa the present one ia un safe, and might cauao the house to h burned. Tlio playground I s in good condition. In the DimieSt diatrict the aciiool la taught by O. A. Savage, the huiiic name but no rotation to Supt. Savage, who ia doing fluo work and lias an enrollment of 23 pupils. The school house is well built and well furnished aa to furniture and equipment. The grounds are nmplo ar.d in good shape This district ia fortunate in having a progreaslve, energotio board, whose members give every attention and oversight to the needa of thoir echool and loyally uphold the teacher and give fall encouragement to the scholara. The school in the Centennial dis trict, three miles south of Grants Pass, has an enrollment of 2!i, with David O'Hnra as teacher. Here too, good work is being done and the scholars are making good progress in their studies. The furnishings and school house surround inga are among tlm poorest in the connty. The desks are old-fashioned home-made affairs, blackboards insufficient, no chair at all lor the teacher, and the steps to the school house are badly out of re pair and are unsafe for persona to use. Tho grounds are in neod of improve ment. The Merlin school Is graded, has two rooms and an enrollment of 67. Mrs. Alice Bacon is principal and has charge of the grammar grade and Miaa Jofophine Grow of the primary grade. This school has aa high a standing for oflioient work aa any school in Josephine county. The house Iswoll built and fully furnished as to furniture and apparatus. The school has a library that it may well be proud of. The village of Merlin ia one of the moat progressivo com munities of Joscphino conuty and its school ia a compliment to the intellec tual standard of tho place. At the Winona school the enroll ment is small as the district it- aparcoly settled, but tlio average at toudauoe is good and the teacher. Miaa Mattie McKimeua ia doing eflloieut work. Tho building ia good and is Tory well supplied with desks and aooofsorica. The Hugo echool ia doing good work with John Hill as teacher and tho building ia modern and well equipped, but the grounds, while large, aro not improved. The very excellent order was one tlio commendable features noticed lit tho Oak Orovn school, of which Mis Hilda MoCurdy ia tiucher. Th building ia good and fairly well sup plied with school appliances, but though there ia a sawmill iu the dis trlct, tho building has no stein mid those entering the school building walk up an Inclined plank.
