THURSDAY'. JUNE 2r. 1003. Onr little Htory of "Joe Lane' Treaty Tree" is being copied very freoly without any credit being given Grover Cleveland ban sjsikeu al last in decided words on tho suhject of bil candicacy for )iresideutial lion era and ias deprived the iro)lit8 of considerable amount, of material An impression lias gone forth among at least a portion of the people that the gambling games which were run nlng during the first days of the car nival were a rt of that institution. This is an utterly wrong impression. The carnival management had no connection management bad no con licet ion whatever With these outfits and it was by the maiiiigoment a effort that the games wero dually dosed, though the carnival Jienple held .that it was the business, of tho city to acl iu the matter rather than themselves. It common to see the assertion in print that the Indian fired the forests in order to burn the trcos out of his way to make good hunting and that the prosH!ctor followed his example becausc the trees were in his way, ftclthor wero such fools, for all woodsmen know that a burned forest with its labyrinth of fallen logs anil the thick brush which springs u , around is about tho most diflicult thing to travel through that can well be imagined. They fired tho woods to burn out the undergrowth and de bri which littered the ground. The trees were not nearly so much iu the war standing np as they would have been lying down. Decanso the woods wero fired frequently, tho standing tlinlmr was not injured except in localities that had not been burned over for number of years. In such there wonld be lieat enough produced to kill the standing timber. There Is so much accumulation of Inflammable material iu the woods now, 4uuder tho present system of forest "pro tection" that a fire is tremendously destructive. The Ashlaud Tidings has tho affront ery la tho faco of all that has Missed, to claim that an aKilogy is due from Grauts Pass lu regard to what it calls ''harsh and unjust criticism" in regard U tho episode of tho presi dent's visit, saying that General If ir i juauagur nruiiscnum nail told ns that it was at tho president's urgent request that the stop was not made U'l.... lr ui lYrmiscnuiii really said was that the train was a complimentary and run In accordance with tho wishes of tho lirosidcnt, expressed thrnugl his secretary and that therefore the 8. P. management was not rcsinsililo But neither Kruttachnltt nor tho Ash land Tidings nor Dlsimlchcr Morris uor "Assistant Huis'rintcudent" O. W, Taylor can coudsidcr ns so simple as to believe for an instant that Kooso volt or even Ixx b troubled himself as to where and when tho train tink wood or water or occupied himself in any way with the minor details or the train's management. Those were taken care of by the subordinates of the Houtheru Pacific as usual, for how could Loeb, even If he wished if ruu train through Southern Oregon otherwise than by their advice anil under their direction as to the minor detaillsf It is well understood throughout Southern Oregon tbal the reason' of the slight was the narrow, contracted and jealous spirit which characterises the town of Ash land and which has been demon strateil lately iu other ways beside this. When Orants Pass decided to hold a carnival and had all the detail arranged, Ashland arranged for an opposiilou event. The week Ixfnre the opening of the carnival, malicious rejvrts of smalljKix and ilipthcria iu Grants Pass were circulated in Gold Hill, Sams Valley ami Central Point and these reports wero started bv Ashland parties. The social train for Jackson county visitors to the I) rant Pass carnival, and which was uuder tho management of the Ashland tram distcher, was not allowed to stop at Phoenix, though sumo 4(1 pen pie Were waiting there to take the train for lirnnis lVs. We received a letter from Waycross, Georgia, s few days ago, from s lady who lias lived there for years. She writes us that she had been troubled with female complaint for s long time, until she was reduced almost to a shadow. It effected her mind, she could not remember any thing would get so confused and so nervous and irritable she could hardly sleep. She described-her case as oue similar to thousands of other women, and then ended the letter by saying she gained 18 lbs. last mouth, and never felt better in her life, having no trace of her former troubles, slept well and ate her meals with a relish. This lady commenced the use of Dr. Guuu's Blood and Nerve Tonic just six weeks before she wrote the letter from which we copy the above This tonic is in tablet form and should be taken right after meals. It turns the food you eat into strong rich blood, making solid flesh and feeding the nerves, curing disease by making healthy flesh. Pale, weak thin people should use this tonic. Sold by W. F.
