. - - USEFUL SOCIETIES. VALUABLE WORK OF VILLAGE IM PROVEMENT ASSOCIATIONS. Towu Batia4 and Balls Cp, Bt. tr fanltarir Laws Sceareal antl Soma IhcaoaeaaJ ImprovtaHii Mad bp TktH Orsaalsatlaaa. Those who would profit by the In creasing attention to tin opportunities ffered by towns and small cities both for Hvlug and for the conduct of busi ness must seeds resolve themselves Into active local Improvement organiza tions such as already exist In all parts Bf ths country, says Trances Copley Besvey In the Chicago Tribune. These societies, clubs, annotation; rail them by what name you will-have ' become the- chief factor In the transfor mation of hundreds of places from the happy go lucky, shiftless, down at the heel appearaucs and condition charac- tertstlc of the ordinary small place to Beat and lively business centers that offer many advantages as places to live. These organizations have been started for various purposes, and worn n have been largely, often exclusively. concerned In their founding and main tennnce. In some Instances the primary cause of the movement has been an active evil due, perhaps, to sanitary defects, as In the case of Montclair, N. J., where an epidemic that roused the women to action was found to spring from a milk aupply poisoned at Its source by fever genus so tluit residents had actually been paying for a fresh stock of flue, active microbes dellverud dally at their doors. Again, It has been the direct result of a longing for nentuess and beauty and good "outdoor housekeep ing." Rome one, usually a woman, has ills covered that the local cemetery, a place hntlowed to every resident, was In a shamefully neglected condition; that a park for holding out of door celebra tions had become a neccsally; that line natural water privileges were being neglected or di-hasi-U by the ignorance or selfishness of the few to the direct detriment of the many, etc. Towns that wero inudholes and dust heaps by turns, whero tradesmen dally turned loose flying flocks of waste pa per to mar the streets and frighten timid horses, where haturully charm ing adjacent country roadsides were made the common dumping ground for all sorts of unsightly ruhhtsb, where vacant lots bore no attempt at decors tlon save mounds of tlu cans and wil dernesses of tangled weeds, have as sumed the pleasant aspect of neatly paved, agreeably shaded streets. Iteceptacles at street Intersections re ceive the erstwbllo loose papers, ba nana skins and other refuso formerly carelessly thrown into the streets to decay or on the sidewalks to produce dirt or disaster. Vacant lots have been cleared up and a weed ordinance passed and enforced. Ashes no longer form mountain ranges along streets and al leys, all being utilized In grading and tilling streets or low ground. Itlver banks have been cleaned, planted and In several Instances walled, and with ths stream have become the chief at traction of the place. Country roads bsvs been relieved of their accouipnii lmeut of broken erncki-ry. wash boil ers, old mattresses slid springs, etc., and nature given the chance to repair damages and make the drives of the Immediate environs as delightful as undisturbed roadsides always are when far enough removed from the haunts of man. It Is a nice comment on the ways of humanity to note that ncglcetcd na ture Is always In way beautiful, never offensive. It Is only when hu man beings crowd in that ugllucKS and stualor result. This truth is even par alleled among dumb brutes. Wild nu lnials du not devastalo nml wipe out the beauty of the woods, fields aud vttorways. it Is only where domestic animals congicgato that vegetation Is destroyed, beauty obliterated and sur roundings made wholly uulH-autlful. Truly civilised man can hardly do less or more than devote some of bis mind. Ingenuity, time, strength aud money to revering up his worse than Unsightly tracks. If natural beauty In the heritage of mankind, If no are to "leave the world more beautiful than we found It," wo must be up aud do ing, for the ways of rlvltlintlou are obstructing or destroying Its charm ut very turu. There must bo some building up where- thero Is so much trampling down, or what will the world look like after a few more generations of "civ lilted" humanity have battered It out of all shape and ruim-llucaa? We go gayly along, rutting ami hacking ut everything we tlml In the way; we, mostly, take no thought In the matter of giving nature au opportunity to re trieve the opportunities thai we have "vrmlcd from her, yet we make a great hullabaloo when there are Ho.hU ami droughts and (insalubrious conditions, although we continue to allow all tin trees slid undergrowth oil the water sheds to be swept away. Cl lll.atlou Is a strsnge term for sui tl stupid, self ish or, at ths best. Ignorant proceed lngs. By some way or other I happened to get hold of a vial of your ' Pellets,' and r thought thev helped me. It was then I wrote to you for advice. You told me that bv iny svmptoins vmi thought I had liver complaint, mid advised the use of v;rt,r (iolden Medical Discovery' and ' 1'lcas.int Pelh-ts' in connection. These medicines I h ive taken as directed, and om very h.-vppy to state that I commenced to pet better from the start, and have not lost a day this summer on account of my stomach. I feel tip-top, and better than I have for ten years." Tie re arc two or three statements in Jlr. Connolly's letter which tiro almost identical with statements made hy thousands of others who have been cured hy the use of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis covery. This shows that his experience is a common one among win king men, and his cute and the means by w hich it was accom plislio,!nTe, therefore, matters of interest to every fellow-worker. "I have employed and been treated by the best doctors in citv. hut trot no help whatever," "1 have hoii'ht anil tried everything I saw advertised for dyspepsia and stomach trouble, hut continued to get worse all the time." "Thesa medicines ('(iolden Medical I li.-covery ' and 'Pleasant Pellets') I have taken as directed, and am very happy to state that I commenced to get better from the start, and have not lost a day this summer on account of my stomach." These three facts in Alt'. Connolly's experience, arc borne, out by the experience of thousand"! of others. Iioctors employed without benefit. Many medicines used and the condition growing worse instead of better. Finally the trial of Ir. Pierce's Golden .Medical Discovery, perfect and a permanent the word of thousands of "Have purchased some of your valuable medicines of L. li. Spencer, of Plackstouc, Va., and thev helped my wife and myself so much that we do not know how to praise them enoi'oli,'' write3 Mr. Victor I.. Hayden, of Ulackstone, Nottoway Co., Va. "I cannot express my gratitication in words. I had been sr.fTering from indigestion so badly that I could not work half the time, hut now can work every day and eat am thing I want. Why? because I took Dr. R. V. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. It lias put new life and energy in me, restored my health and made a man of me ou. e more. I used to weigh 170 but had gotten down to 144, now I am back to 160 ami will soou be back to my old weight. Your medicine has done it nil. I cannot thank voti enough for your advice, and think if it had jiot been for your medicine neither my wife nor myself wo.ild have been here many years." Ir. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery cures diseases uf the stomach and other organs nf digestion and nutrition. It cures liver "complaint,'' heart " trouble," kidney " trouble," and "weak" lungs, because the diseased condition of these organs is fre quently only a cons -ijuetii'i' of disease of the stomach and its allied organs of di"es tior. and nutrition.
