Mrs. H. C. Perkins aud Miss Myrtle Ireland, who accompanied the Perkins surveying expedition during tho trip iu the Cascades, returned ou Sunday evening after a visit in Eugene. Richard Piindle, of Chicago, presl-' dent of tho Old Channel Mining Com pany, left ou Monday's train for his return east after a visit of several days looking after his mining in terests in Josephine county. J. D. Mock of Alhia, Iowa, arrived here Monday evening. He expects to remain permanently and is well pleas ed with our country. Mr. Mock is the father of our townsman A. II. Mock, to whom his advent was a pleasant surprise. R. B. and Grallie Baber returned Saturday evening after an absence during the summer in eastern Oregon and northern California. Graffiti has been very seriously ill from blood poison but is now steadily improving. Fred Welch, well known throughout Southern Oregon, and who lately nr rived at Grants Pass from Dawson, Alaska, where he sjient a couple of years, is visiting with relatives and old friends at Crescent City, his former home. O. C. Baker, one of the former proprietors of tho Grants Pass Steam Laundry, has leased tho Roselmrg Steam Laundry for a term of years and departed the. first of the week to take charge. J. V. Baker will remain iu charge, of tho laundry in this city. Dr. O. E. Beard, wife mid little son, from Whitewood, South Dakota, are visiting relatives and old ac quaintances in Grants Pass. Dr. Beard was formerly a practicing physician iu this city but left here some eight years ago on account of Mrs. Beard's health. Mr. and Mrs. E liner Crockett, of South Bend, Ind., ttre visiting iu Josephiuo county, tho gnests of Mr. Crockett's brother, Judge Garrett Crockett. Mr. Crockett was here three years ago and found our country so pleasant that he decided to repeat the visit. He is ono of tho proprietors of tho South Bend Tribune. W. D. O'Brien, who was formerly engaged in mining enterprises iu Southern Oregon, stopped oft Sunday for a few days' visit with friends in Jackson comity, while ou Ins wav from Aluska to California. M., entertained the knights of Tent No. 18, aud their friends, at a pleasant social in Woodman Hall, Thurstlay evening. The event wai a happy one in every way. A program was rendered, oousistiug of a pretty drill by 16 ladies iu re galia. An address of welcome was given by ILrttio Calvert, and greetings from tho lady commander were ex teuded by Mn II. A. Corliss. Miss Nettie Duulap delivered a recitation, and R. G. Smith gave a history of the order of the Ladies of Maccabees. A vocal solo was giveu by Russell Drake and greetings from the record keeper were read by Mary Simmons. Mrs. Williams reviewed the excellent record and financial standing of the order. Clark, now of Portland, has purchased the Booth-Dysert hydraulic placer mines in tho Jump-off-Joo dis trict, aud tho nd joining farms of Pol lock and Davis, of Northern Jose phine count v. Tho consideration for the farms and placers is $-.'.", (XX) cash. Mr. Clark is a brother of Senator Clark, of Montana, and was formerly a resident of Butte, but has now be come extensively interested iu Oregon milling properties. The property just purchased in Josephine county m- ludes 777 acres and comprises some of the richest placer ground in South em Oregon. It is tho intention of Mr. Clark to equip his new ly-acquired placer fields iu such a way as to mako them. one of tho largest hydraulic properties in this sectiou of the state. The liooth-Dysert placers are already quite well equipped, but not so ex tensively and adequately ns their richness and area justify. These placers have been worked for a mini her of years by Joseph C. Dysert and R. F. Miller with excellent results. The ground occupies the bed of au old channel anil lies in a gulch formed by Jaques creek, wluch is a small stream tributary to Jump-nff-Joe. 'i'ho dirt in' a Mark and blue gravel with a capping of red clay on the surface. The banks lie .V.) to UK) feet ill depth and carry both coarse and fine gold, the values being distributed through all puts of the ground from the grass roots down. The equipment consists of several miles of ditches tapping the headwaters of the creek, several hun dred feet of piping and comfortable, buildings aud quarters for tho men. Mr. Clark has put a crew of mi n to work iu tho re-equipr nt of the mines. The ditches wUl he made wider and deeper, longer pipe lines will be laid, mid the placers made more extensive and commodious throughout. Nearly tiOiK) feet of new piping will he laid. By this improve ment, tho operators will bo able to work tho placers from tho mouth to the gulch, rr the point of junction of thi two si reams, to tho Inud of Jaques ('nek, ami will have adequate dump ing grouds for their tailings all the way. Hale, of Grau'.s Pass, has filed with the" City Auditor a claim for (1(H) damages for Injuries alleged to have been bus tained by a fall into an excavation which was not guarded by dangc lights. Judge Hale says that when hu whs about to leave Portland ou the night of October 1 ho decided to walk to the Union Depot.
