THE LOST BILL! (Original. My inttbcr died when I wa eighteen yean old and my father married again. My atcpmotucr toon bad chil dren of her own, and It wag to her in terest thnt I should not marry and rear a furaily, for alio had arranged with my father that if he died before I bad issuo I was to have but a small fraction of bis estate. If, on the con trary, I married and bad a family, I was to bare half. I did not think Mrs. Mendlcott so depraved as to commit any overt act to keep me from ninrrlnire, but be lieved she would foHter 'any circum stance that might lead to that result Bue had a governess for her children, Adele Trlmbnll, a sweet, patient girl of strong character, with whom I fell lu love. As soon as Mrs. Mcndlcott discovered the situation she gave Miss Trinilinll notice that she would dis pense with her services. The day lieforo bcr departure sbo came Into the lllW''y1 where I was sitting, very much discomposed. "What is Itr 1 asked. (ieorge." she said, "Mrs. Mendlcott lias made up her mind to keep us apart by ruining me." "How do you know?" "Know! I've seen through her from the llrst. What do you suppose she has dune? On going Into my room just now I found a twenty dollar bill on the floor before my dressing table. Mrs. Mendlcott put It there In the hope that 1 would take It and she could ac cuse me of stealing It." 'What did you do with itr "Left It where she placed It. 1 wouldn't touch It with a pair of tongs." "Thnt won't do. I'll go and get it." I hastened to the room and looked all over the tloor, but the bill wus not there, nor could Adele find It when she went to look for It. Mrs. Mendlcott an nounced that she had lost a twenty dol lar bill In Allele's room wheu she went there wltb her purse lu her baud to put some clothes In the empty bureau drawers. Khe left us all to draw our own Inference. I did not propose that Adele should rest under such un imputation. I u.uc tioned my stepmother, not telling her that I had been warned In the mutter, and sho convinced me that she bad not herself taken the money from the room. I questioned the servants, but gained no clew from any of them till I came to Joe, the colored manservant. I looked Joe lu the eye and snw tliero a sly shrewdness that convinced mo of bis guilt. I sen relied him and bis room, but found nothing. Then my father canio to mo and In sisted that Miss Trlmbull's elTects be searched before she left the house. 1 protested, but without avail. The bill was not found, but more money was in tier possession than it was believed she had, for alio was very poor and her salary had been very small. At sny rate, Mrs. Mendlcott convinced my fa ther thnt Adele was tho thief, and 1 wns Informed thnt If I married bcr I would be disinherited. Wbnt would it avail to tell my father that Adele bad seen the bill In her room nd told mo of It? Hueh a statement would not bo believed and would only Widen tho breach. Either Mrs. Mendl cott had taken the bill herself or some one had gone Into the room lu Allele's absence and taken It. I Inclined to ward the hitler opinion. I must either And the thief or lose my patrimony, be sides seeing the girl I would marry ro mnlu umer a cloud. I luy awuke the light of Allele's departure thinking out somo plan of Investigation, but 'could bit oil nothing. I believed that Joe bad appropriated the bill, but since ho and his effects hsd been searched thero seemed to be nothing more to do. One Kuniluy evening Joe emtio home smoking s cigarette. Ho bnd a cob plpo In the atablo which bo smoked when off duty, and I had sometimes seen him smoking a clgnr, but ucver before a clgnrettu. I hud been watch ing for hi in to possess something new which he hnd bought with the money 1 believed he bad taken. "Joe," I said, "have you another clg sretto?" He pulled out a package and bunded It to me. I took one, looking Into Joe's face ns I did so and noticed thnt bo ap peared anilum. Lighting tho ciga rette, I puffed awhile, then said: "These nro fine, Joe, Where did you get them?" Ho told me, and In tun minutes I wns In the shop In conference with the to bacconist to find out If Joe bnd offered large bill for bis purchnse. I was disappointed, -Tho boy hnd pnld In small change. I-ntcr I went out to the stable, where I found Joo enjoying bis pipe. "Hnve yon iinother cigarette, Joe?" 1 asked. "No, sir; I smoked 'cm all up." "What! Hmuked ten cigarettes In an hour?" "Well, you see, I give some of 'cm away." "Whom did you give (hem to?" "I gave Vm to" Ho could get no further. He was cornered. "What makes thnt lump In your vest pocket?" He looked down at the pocket, while I, putting my thumb ami linger Into It. drew out a paper ease half full of cig arettes, i I felt sure I was on the scent and Old not wntite any time. Taking a clg- ' a ret to from the case, I pulled It to pieces. There was nothing In ll but to baeeo. I tried another with tho same result. I broke up four without Hinting anything, but when I tried the fifth 1 could net brink It. Teiiilng the wrap-H-r, I uncovered green paper an J lu an other moment bad unrolled a twenty dollar bill. ; WARREN R. ATIIF.RTON. The telescope shows us what is Invisible to the hu man eye, and photography shows us what the telescope alone fails to reveal. A portion of the heavens exposed for hours to the telescopic camera gives n photograph of stars the existence of which could not otherwise be recog nized." Julian Malnwariiig, one of those who heard the lecture, was of un Inquiring turn of mind. "If an Invisible star," be reasoned, "may be photographed by long exposure, why not an invisible spirit?' The more be thought on the subject the more he felt disposed to muke an attempt to test the truth of bis theory. He took up his camera ami, going to bis homestead, now In charge of a curetukcr, went to a room on the second floor, placed on old rocking chair In a window and planted bis camera to point toward It. "There," he said to himself; "If grand mother exists and Is moving about among us lu en Invisible body, she Is sure to lie there where she always sat In the afternoon at bcr needlework." Now, It so hnpiiened that Julian Mulnwarlng had a cousin, Kate Main waring, In the woman's college of the university, to whom be confided his ex periment. Kuto confided the matter to a friend, and in the afternoon the two girls visited the homcHteiul, carrying between them a large gripsack. That evening Julian removed his plate and the next day made a proof. When he came to examine the result of bis labor, he nearly collapsed with as tonishment. While he was examining It be received a note from bis cousin Kate asking him to come In the even ing and let her know tho result of bit spirit photography. He wns dying wltb a desire to communicate bis success to some one and could scarcely wait foi evening. When he arrived, be found several of Kate's f Iinouiiutoa and scv era I of bis own. "Conic, Julian," said Kate as soon in be entered. "Wo are all unxloiis tc learn the result. Iihl you get grand mother on your plote?" "I got something very queer," be re plied, producing his proof. It was n good deul blurred, as might be expect ed from a ghost picture, but there m recognizable not a wrinkled old woman but a pretty young girl. Kate threw up her bauds. . "(irundiiiu!" she exclaimed. "Why, It's a young k''I." ahl one oi the fellows. "It's grandma ns a girl," said Kate. "Vou don't mean It!" cried one of the girls. "Wonderful!" exclaimed another. "Whnt ll pleusure to know," remark ed one of the fellows, "that women at least uro alwuys young In the spirit luml." "And frivolous," said one of the glrl more given to flirting than to study. "At any rate, they wear becoming clolhcs-the clothes they wore ut tin Most attractive age." ' "Why, It's grandma's pink silk," said Kate. ".Msminii has It up stairs In 0 trunk." "What Is she doing?" "Hewing, but she's put down bei work and would you believe It? - she'i taking a pinch of snuff." "Hnufri A young girl tuke snun"!" "(irsndmu did as an old woman, and that's her snuffbox. It's among mil heirlooms." "If they diesa young, they should net young. No girl ever took miufT." "Julian, old fellow," said one of hit classinuteg, "tell us how you got It." You tee the result. I don't know whut It menus any more than you do." "I have heard Kale baa the power of calling up spirits," nuh' one of her clussmiites. "1 never heard of It," said Julian. "Try It, Kute." There was a universal demand for n spirit from the bostiHS, so to quiet tho clamor she called: "Come forth, grniulnm!" A door opened, mid the counterpart of the spirit photograph walked Into the room.
