Miller, of Oregon, U.S. Consul at New Chang, China, has called the attention of tho chamber of commerce of tho city of Portland to the national industrial exposition, to be hold at Osaka, Jupnn, iu 1903, and has suggested that it might be well for the people of Oregon to ar range for an exhibit, esiieoially in view of the fact that wo shall in vite the Japanese to come to tho Lew is and Clark centennial in 1SK)5. The sumo proposition stares us iu tho face in regard to the St. Louis fair. We shall expect liberal support from ex hibitors at the St. Louis fair, there fore we should bo liberal exhibitors. We should send an exhibit to those ulrs, bigger and better than wo ever sent to any other exposition. It will tako work and money to prepare these xhibits, and it is none too soon to begin tho work of planning how to get them up. As the exhibits will have to be made up from this year's crop in the agricultural and horticul tural departments, it would bo well to take some stops towards securing lose exhibitB at an early day. Learning to Swim, The value of swimming as an exer cise has boon proved by somo of the most famous athletes, and the mastery of this accomplishment, moreover, may some day mean tho saving of human life. .That boys and girls should be taught to swim admits of no argument. Aa It is, tho majority of children fear the water, and much of this fear Is due to the misguided anxiety of their par ents. Tho trouble with beginners is that they mako too much of tho task; provided the effort is made, tho slight est muscular effort will suflloo to keep one afloat. How readily one may learn to swim is shown in tho Juno DeHnou tor by an expert in the art, who do- ribos the various strokes, lloats div ing, costume, etc., in tho simplest man ner possiblo.
