George Fisher spent a few days in town this week from Deer creek, where he is now located, returning on Tuesday. Mrs. Sarah Fountain, of Idaho, who baa been visiting lately in Ashland, came down to Grants Pass Hatorday evening. Mrs. Weatherby of Kerbv is in Grants Pass looking after the health of her grand-daughter, who has been seriously ill. Mrs. R. L, Demaree returned on Mon day morning to Placer after a week's visit with relatives aad friends in this city. Mrs. A. E. Voorhies and little Earle returned on Saturday evening from a visit at Colestia with the family of II. C. Telford. Wm. H. Thompson, of the Old Channel Mining Co., arrived here from Chicago Monday evening to look after mining interests in this county. F. R. McGregor left on Saturday for Crescent City to rejoin his wife and littls son who have been visiting there for several weeks. Ben Simpkins, who is engaged in mining at MyrUe Creek, has been visit ing during the past week at his home near Merlin and in Grants Pass. Mr. J. R. McGrew of Grants Pass, s nephew of our night watchman, arrived in this city early in the week. He is an engineer and tinner and will probably locate with us. Crescent City News. R, W. Benson left on Monday for San Francisco, where he will be perma nently located. Mrs. Benson and the children will visit for a time in Wash ington before joiuing him there. Victor Peterson has gone to Coles, on the Biskiyous, where be will be engaged In the lumber busines, during the com ing summer. His family will join him there later in the week. ' James Blanton, of Marion county, a former resident. o Evans creek, has lately been visiting bis friend J. SI. Munkers, in Ashland and went to Woodvilleon Saturday. He will visit in Grants Pass before returning home. Republican Convention. The republican delegates met in con vention at the court bouse on Saturday afternoon witb a full representation from all parts of the county to place a ticket in the field for the coming June election and to elect delegates to the state and congressional conventions to be held In Portland. W, II. Hampton was nominated as temporary chairman by A. O. Hough and the nomination Was confirmed by unaaimous rising vote. L. V. Stewart was chosen secretary. The following committees were ap pointed : credentials, J. S. Moore, Jos. Mots, H. L. Truax; order of business, F. YT. Cbausse, J. C. Campbell, I. E. Dunbar. A short recess was given in which the committees prepared their reports. The first order of business was the election of seven delegates to the state convention and the following named were chosen : J. C. Campbell, F. W. Cbausse, II. L. Truai, W, II. Babcock, J. Steiner, L. V. Stewart, W. II. Hamp ton. On motion, these same delegates were elected to represent Josephine eonnly in the congressional convention. For representative, J. Holman pre sented the name of W. II. Hampton, bo declined. Judge W. C. Hale was nominated by J. S. Moore. There be ing no ether nominee the secretary cast the ballot for Judge Hale. For county judge, C. E. Maybee, J. H. Williams and B. O. MoCulloch re named. The result of the ballot was as follows: Maybee, 16; Williams, 34; McCullocb, 4. Wil iami was declared the nominee. For sheriff, the only name presented was that of U. W. Lewis, of Altbouse, who was nominated by acclamation For county clerk, R. L. Bartlett and Will Smith were named. Bartlett received 38 votes; Smith, 17. For assessor, Calvin Wells, W. 11 Fallin and Chas. Crow appeared as the neminees. renin was chosen as the candidate, the vote standing as follows; Wells 1J: Fsllin, S3; Crow 10, Ths office of county treasurer was the only contest in the convention. C. C. Presley won by one vote over ('to. R. Riddle, the voie standing 28 to 27. For county commiM.oner, Garrett Crockett, of Merlin, and G. M. Savage were named. The vote stood 31 to 24 in favor of Crockett. B. O. McCulloch was chosen as sur veyor and A. J. Pike as coroner. By resolution, offered by J. H. Wil liams, the Joeephine county delegates were Instructed to support F. W Chaoses for state printer in the stste convention.
