The increase id cultivation and iriina- lion in the Columbia liver valley it uggesled to be productive of an iu created flow of lilt in that itreaui, which In the rapid formation of banal the month of tbe river may become a aerious problem later on. It It not with tttitlic tion that at note that Sunday borte racing ia becom ing too much of a regular occurrence in tliit city. Horn racing in itsell It not reprehensible, but the gambling that nearly invariably accompanies it it deinoraliilng an J greatly more to that it happens on Hunday. For all Ingenious names, and there are many, aprended lo quarts locations, it seems to us that those who named tbe "Roaring Gimlet" should be awarded! premium. Tbe name it a good one, though, and seems to carry with it a suggestion of keen activity and brink liveliness that would make a hornet blush with shame at his inability to produce. The mine at pretnt it living np to tbe standard of tentatioo set by its name. Discharged soldiers, to the number of several hundred, wrecked a saloon In the vicinity of the Presidio on Friday evening. They claimed that one of their number had been drugged in tb place. They demolitbtd everything possible, tried to kill the one man who belonged to the place and set tbe build ing on fire by orerlurning lamps. Police and soldiers of the pott ware alike powerless lo quell the riot nntil the fire bote was turned en. This cooling and invigorating application did much toward restoring order. The attempt to protect the flocks of tlioi who are engaged In theepraiting from tbe depredation of the fraudlul and voraciout coyote by legislation hat, it would seem, reached farther than was intended, and the scalp bounty law baa encouraged tbe growth of jackrabbils to the injury of the wheat grower's interetts In Eaatern Oregon counties. It baa besides, foltted upon llie county cleikiofthe several coyote counties a most malodorous class of records in the decaying coyote acalpt, though I hi un pleats utnpss could be avoided by more Irecjuent meeting ol the county court, which is directed by law to burn the scalps after verifying the clerk's state ment ol the number. It may be as turned that farmers will object lo tbe protection of sheep husbandry at the sipenee of Iheir on fields and pocket, and there ia surely trouble ahead lor the coyote koontv in Oregon. Oregonian. The oil dcitcnienl lias brought forth a new phenomenon, an oil prophet with his divining rod, with which be locales oil. Such instrumtiits lur the purpose of locating gold are no ttrangeia, but tbe oil rod ia a new one. With tbit magical instrument the operator proletaes ability not only to locate oil strata but also lo ascertain the depth. He can ait in his teat in the cars and in two minute tell whether or not there it oil beneath him ami the number of leet it liet"lo surface. He can do this while the train is iu motion though not so accurately. All this is according to hit stati'inent. The prophet located oil all along the line from Redding almost lo Ashland. Tl.en tie rod took a vacatioo until the Colum bia river was reached It seems tht thing wouldn't operate in Oregon. The lethargy el the instrument will doubt lens dash the spirits of the people of Hit Rogue, I'uipqu and Willamette river valleys, who have believed It not un likely that oil might be found in those localities. The oil prophet ia a new arrival but he belongs to a species whom we know. Pine Needle Exhibits. The pine needle eihihit, sent lo Buffalo by the Pacific I'ine Needle Co. of this city, receives the inlereat ihere bich it merit. The Htiffalo C-urii r says: Sometime r.ext week, the first carload of supplemental exhibits will arrive. One of the most interesting con signments in Ibis car will be a large exhibit of pine needle wool al 0 of 'tobacco' and cigars made o'jt of the same material. 'As the name implies, pine needle wool it a product of the needles of the Oregon pines. It is manufactured no where else in the United States, although it is made In some parts of Europe. The needles are boiled in large vats, then worked through machinery by a process which takes out the fibrous growth from the inside of the needles. This is dried and is the pine needle wool. 'It is a new industry, but a very proraiiingoue', said Commiaaiiner Dotcb. 'The product is used now principally for iluff.ng mattresses, but we expect shortly to manufacture a coarae kind of cloth out of it. For mattresses there is nothing to beat It.
