Ho says that the free silver issue is dead, hence he favors the gold standard and the policy of oipen sion. __________________ There is a bill before the legislature to amend the Charter of Grants Pat*« The city council proposed the amend ments and the substance of there, or the principal ones, is as follows Author izing the people to bend, if they so de sire, not to exceed >100,000 indebtedness; Authorizing the mayor to appoint the marshal and street commissioner to be confirmed by the council; Empowering the council to raise, if need be, the city tax levy to 10 mills and in special cases to 15 mills; Empowering the council, in case a water system or a sewer is put in, to levy a tax or to assess the damages to profierty holders A petition has been sent to the legislature requesting that laxly to amend the Charier dividing the city into wards, but to this latter proposition there wav sent up a reruon •trance. We do not know what reasons the remonstraters give for opposing the division, but it was advocated in th«* council that it would increase the city’s expense. It would perhaps make an in crease of a very few dollars, but the ben efit to be derived would far outweigh the paltry expense.
