The Columbia Press October 8, 2021 Letter to the editor Guide service is causing problems I am a 77-year-old owner of a riverfront townhouse. Neigh- boring properties are owned by nonresidents, members of the same family. When they come to stay, the neighborhood turns into a campground with large boats, RVs, and vehicles crammed into restricted parking areas. As property owners, these people have rights – just as we, the residents do. How- ever, the attitudes of those who don’t respect this area as their home convert the entire street into a campground. One of the property owners is conducting a fishing guide service business out of the residence. He stays here tem- porarily during the sport-fish- ing season. With him comes a large, 30-foot fishing boat with billboard-style advertis- ing covering the surfaces. He parks the boat for sev- eral days at a time on the streets outside our homes. At times, his fishing custom- ers are staying in other prop- erties that his relatives own in the neighborhood. They’re loud, they have several trucks and cars that they park here while they’re out fishing with “Capt. Gordy.” It’s beyond description how our entire street is impact- ed. These properties (three of them) are owned by people from outside our communi- ty, and they do have proper- ty-owner rights. But they don’t seem to be held accountable for hav- ing to follow code rules. I visited the city to express my concern over these viola- tions. It is against city code to operate a business in a res- idential neighborhood. The answer given to me was that the owner of the guide service denied the violations, even saying he wasn’t parking his boat on the streets here. He denied having people rent his family’s property while fish- ing. He denied operating his business from the townhouse in our neighborhood. That’s all it takes. The city said – “Okay! Here’s your business license!” Along with his license to oper- ate his business against city code, his 30-foot boat remains parked on the streets of our neighborhood. The city of Warrenton has granted implied permission to violate rules that are in- convenient for him and his family. Also implied are the added rights that don’t exist in any city code – the rights to be “preferred” in issues like this. The city has claimed to have “investigated,” yet they wouldn’t even look at proof that I and another neighbor took to them. We showed that there are violations and we talked for half an hour about them and offered photos. After we left, the city claimed that they had inves- tigated thoroughly and found no evidence that there were boats in the street or a busi- ness operated out of a resi- dence here. If they “investi- gated,” they would have seen – with one drive-through on our street. Schol- arships for first-generation students open in spring 2022 at Warrenton and Seaside high schools through each school’s counseling office. Seaside AAUW Scholarship Foundation was awarded $6,000 in grants from Pa- cific Power to support schol- arships and promote edu- cational opportunities for women. Four thousand dollars will be used to support scholar- ships for women returning to school after a five-year absence and $2,000 will be used to provide scholarships for first-generation college students. Nearly 60 percent of peo- ple said the pandemic makes them more likely to visit small, local businesses than big-box stores. Savings.com surveyed 1,000 adults about their shopping habits before the pandemic, before vaccine rollout, and today, focusing on in-person and online shopping. Fifty-eight percent said they prefer to shop locally because of the pandemic, two in three said they’d spend even more if they had more options.
