“Local history is my pre-
ferred interest to read and
write about,” Ratty said. “(It
is) a subject I could talk about
forever.”
Despite limitations im-
posed by the pandemic, Rat-
ty found many out of print
books and articles about local
native American tribes and
their lifestyles.
The biggest surprise from
his research?
“Overall, the Indian culture
and how proud and deter-
mined these people were,” he
said. “One little tidbit was, al-
though I knew about
the many epidemics,
I was taken aback at
the rapid demise of
the tribes.”
Ratty’s writing style
is more storytelling
than historical tome,
he said. “Without
historical
fiction
there would be no Bi-
ble.”

for advisory panel
Three seats are open on the
Clatsop County Human Ser-
vices Advisory Council.
The council advises the
County Commission on is-
sues regarding developmen-
tal disabilities, mental health,
and alcohol and drug abuse
services. The council meets
on the first Thursday of each
month to identify needs, es-
tablish funding priorities,
and assist in the selection of
service providers.
Two of the vacancies are for
three-year terms ending Feb.
28, 2024, and one for a term
ending Feb. 28, 2023.
Application forms are avail-

at the County Manager’s Of-

410, Astoria. Applications are
due by 5 p.m. July 28.
