Junior Ranger event
kicks off park week
National Park Week kicks off
Saturday, April 17, and Lewis and
Clark National Historical Park is
focusing on youth events.
Junior Rangerpalooza 2021 runs
through April 24.
To participate, children and teens
can stop by the Fort Clatsop Visitor
Center on Saturday and pick up a
ranger book (there is a limited sup-
ply).
Each day will have a different ac-
tivity. Saturday’s activity is the Na-
tional Historic Trail, followed by
activities centering on sounds, the
night, railroads, space and fishing.
There will be Junior Ranger dis-
plays throughout the park and a
virtual “swearing in” of all junior
rangers on the park’s Facebook
page on April 24.
The Lewis & Clark National Park
Association Bookstore will carry
special Junior Ranger items during
the week as well.
Fort Clatsop is open 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. For more information, call
503-861-2471.

design is approved

into the city’s busiest intersection,
Ensign Lane at Highway 101.
“I appreciate the fact that this is
housing that is affordable. It’s need-
ed in this community,” said Paul
Mitchell, chairman of the Planning
Commission. But he bristled at the
realization the city would receive no
property taxes from the nonprofit
agency owning the property.
“I do have a problem when it
comes to how do we continue to
grow this community and our infra-
structure, … add more people to our
schools, put a bigger burden on fire
and police and city services,” Mitch-
ell said.
In the end, the project’s site design
was approved with the caveat that
developers will continue to work
with the city’s community develop-
ment department on equitable fees
to help pay for traffic circulation im-
provements.
