Pac Power donates to heritage park Pacific Power showed its support for the Scandinavian Heritage Park recently by presenting a check for $1,500 to the organization. The money is intended for construction of the park, be- tween 15th and 16th streets on the Riverwalk in Astoria. The money came from Pacific Power Foundation, the phil- anthropic arm of the organi- zation, which has as its mis- sion to support the growth and vitality of the communi- ties Pacific Power serves. The grant was made to hon- or the rich heritage of the Scandinavians in the com- munity and to show the im- portance of preserving the history of the early immi- grants who established As- toria, said Alisa Dunlap, re- gional manager. Designs for the park are 90 percent complete and con- struction will start once suffi- cient funds have been raised. She passed away very peace- fully surrounded by family at the home of her son, Joseph F. Rubens, Jr., Vancouver, WA, after a short illness. Her husband of 71 years, JF Rubens, Sr. preceded her in death, June 11, 2016. They would announce every an- niversary with words taken from a W.H. Auden poem: “I’ll love you, dear, I’ll love you Till China and Africa meet, And the river jumps over the mountain And the salmon sings in the street.” She was born at home in Chatham Hill, Virginia, the daughter of Ethel Jean and William Buchanan. She moved with her family to Warrenton, Oregon when she was four years old and lived there most of her adult life. Her heritage was Finn- ish American, and she lived the true meaning of the word “Sisu” with a vital positive spirit, and a progressive out- look. She accepted everyone she met with equal regard, kindness and good humor. She was very active in local sports, playing volleyball and softball and supported many family members and friends in local sporting events. Ev- ery Saturday, without fail, she enjoyed socializing at many garage and estate sales with her close sister, Jacquie Nichols, and meeting friends for lunch afterwards. She vol- unteered as a docent at the Flavel Museum, and was a member of the local Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by her three children: Rebecca Rubens, Astoria, OR; JF Rubens Jr, Vancouver, WA and Ken- neth Rubens, Portland, OR. Grandchildren: Jill Salem- no, Philadelphia; Nicole Schwartz, Sandy, OR; David Rubens, Vancouver, WA; Noah Bell, Portland, OR, and Joey Cody, Knoxville, Ten- nessee. Great grandchildren: Iris Weaver-Bell and Maxwell Bell, of Portland, OR; Eve Rubens, Vancouver, WA; Brittney Salemno, Philadel- phia; and Ashley Salemno, Delaware. Great, great grandchild: Carter Salemno, Philadel- phia. Sisters: Mary Ellen Silver and Patricia Smith, Portland, OR; Jacquie Nichols, War- renton, OR and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
