Around here, that means fishing family,” he said. “My grandpa fished pretty much his whole life. My great-grandpa did, too.” Each summer, he has gone fishing with them in Alaska, something he’d like to con- tinue doing while also pur- suing his goal of becoming a diesel mechanic. The program is in the pro- cess of being categorized as a STEM (science, technolo- gy, engineering and math) class, which could bring ad- ditional funding to the high school. STEM classes are meant to bring real-world ex- perience and job training for students who may not be col- lege-bound. “This is real,” Porter said. “This isn’t like you’re in a classroom writing on paper. If they (students) don’t take care of them, they will die. They witness the whole thing from egg, to hatching, to re- lease.” Bio-Oregon in Hammond donates food for the fish and the school district maintains the hatchery buildings.
