May 11, 2018 T he C olumbia P ress 8 This weekend Golf ball drop benefits local schoolkids Assistance League of the Columbia Pacific has its 11th annual Golf Ball Drop at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Astoria Golf and Country Club, 33445 Sunset Beach Road. Golf balls are $10, which is used to benefit school programs throughout Clat- sop County. The 2,000 in- dividually sponsored balls are dropped from a helicop- ter; those landing closest to the pin win prizes. Tickets are available at Holly McHone Jewelers in Astoria. It will be followed by a cocktail party and silent auction. Tickets for the par- ty and auction are $25 and sold separately. Master Gardener program to have plant sale Saturday Clatsop County Master Gar- dener Association will have its spring garden seminar and plant sale from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Clatsop County Fair- grounds. Admission is free. Included are classes, ven- dors, raffles and gardening advice. Several classes are offered, including “Edible Vertical Gardening in Small Spac- es” from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., “Designing with Native Plants” from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and “Grafting Vegeta- bles” from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Letter carriers to collect food for local food bank The largest one-day food drive in Oregon and the na- tion is Saturday, May 12. Volunteers and letter carri- ers will collect food on behalf of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. More than 4,000 letter car- riers in Oregon and Clark County, Wash., will collect canned and shelf-stable foods set out at mailboxes of postal customers. Last year, 1 million pounds was collected. While this is a national campaign, donated food stays in the community where it is collected. College to celebrate new art books with reception Thursday The Dora Badollet Library at Clatsop Community Col- lege will celebrate the ad- dition of new art books to its collection with a public reception from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 15. The public is invited to the free event. Light refreshments will be provided. Each year, the library re- ceives free books from Art Resources Transfer, an or- ganization that distributes materials on art and cultur- al issues to public, school and alternative libraries in rural and inner-city areas through the Distribution to Underserved Communities Library program. Scores of art books will be on display, including works on Carol Bove, Walker Evans, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Mona Hatoum, Huang Yong Ping and Fred Sandback. An engaging week of art ac- tivities continues at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 17, with the opening of the 2018 Annual Student Art Show at the Roy- al Nebeker Gallery.
