T he C olumbia P ress February 2, 2018 Cart thief hits car and police officers A homeless man took a motorized shopping cart from Fred Meyer, drove it to Ross Dress for Less and then Rite Aid, where he al- legedly stole a DVD player, before striking a car in the parking lot, police said. Officers caught up with Jacob M. Kitzman, 26, who was still on the cart, near Pizza Hut about 5:50 p.m. Monday. He had removed a DVD player from its box, but denied any knowledge of it, Chief Matt Workman said. He was placed in the back of a patrol car while an offi- cer began interviewing wit- nesses inside the stores. “Kitzman then started kicking the back window of the patrol car, so offi- cers told him to stop and attempted to remove him,” Workman said. Kitzman fought with them and they eventually used a taser, Workman said. Ini- tially, it had no effect, so of- ficers took him to the ground and the scuffle continued with an officer getting struck in the head several times and another officer being kicked in the knees. “After a couple of con- tact-stuns with the taser, Kitzman was able to be handcuffed but continued to resist and be verbal with the officers,” Workman said. Oregon State Police and Clatsop County Sheriff’s of- ficers arrived to assist and medics checked on Kitzman before taking him to Colum- bia Memorial Hospital. He continued to be unco- operative and kicked at both officers and hospital staff, Workman said. Kitzman was booked for as- saulting a public safety offi- cer, resisting arrest, theft of a shopping cart and shoplifting. The officer struck in the head was taken to the emer- gency room for a possible concussion and later released. Grorud-Colvert is an assis- tant professor in the Integra- tive Biology Department at Oregon State University. The talk is part of the “Na- ture Matters” series of lec- tures. Grorud-Colvert will take listeners on an underwater adventure to show how Ore- gon’s unique ecosystem sup- ports the incredible journey fish take traveling from open ocean to nearshore waters to deep offshore. She’ll speak on what juve- nile fish can teach us about ocean protection as well as the state’s new system of ma- rine reserves established to protect Oregon’s ocean as a place of productivity and bio- diversity.
