January 12, 2018 T he C olumbia P ress Letter to the Editor Vote ‘No’ on health care tax Oregon voters beware. The Measure 101 sales tax on health care will not lower health insurance, nor will it improve health care for Ore- gon families. However, it is expected that pro-tax bureaucrats in Salem will keep raising this tax just as most sales taxes around the nation are continually raised. These are some of those who will be hardest hit with the cost of this health care sales tax: •Medicaid providers them- selves will be taxed under this new plan, potentially re- ducing payments to doctors and nurses who already work at cost to help Oregon’s need- iest citizens. • Thousands of college stu- dents attending Oregon’s universities and community colleges who will be forced to pay higher tuition because of the schools’ having to pay the health care sales tax. • Oregon school districts in the large group market, caus- ing an expected $25 million to be sucked out of our local schools. • The PEBB (Public Em- ployee Benefit Board) plan will be taxed, pulling $12 mil- lion from our general fund. • Patients in hospitals NOTICE OF SHERIFF’S SALE whose net revenue will have a hard sales tax imposed and will pass it on to the patients’ health insurance costs. • Small businesses (under 50 employees) who cover their employees’ health care. Who won’t pay Measure 101 taxes? Large corporations, unions and the insurance companies themselves are exempt from the law! Oregon is already the sixth biggest tax-and-spend state in the nation at $9,070 per person. Please vote “No” on Measure 101 by Jan. 23. It is bad policy for all Oregon families! Chris Bridgens Warrenton Facilities: School district makes plans to expand Rose said. The planning committee, which includes 20 mem- bers of the community and school staff, began meeting in the fall. The group gave the school board an overview Wednesday night of what will be needed to meet fu- ture maintenance and space demands, how much it will cost to cover them and how the district would fund major building projects. The group determined what was needed and what was crucial, Rose said. Even- tually, members prioritized projects based on strong community sentiment and affordability. According to a summary Rose wrote, the district’s fu- ture expansion must include: • An adjustable configura- tion to accommodate popula- tion changes. • A focus on students. Con- tinued over-use of the grade school site makes learning more difficult. • Career and technical edu- cation. • Makerspace and science, technology, engineering and math opportunities. Any de- velopment of new space must include hands-on labs. • Success like the fish-hatch- ery. The high school’s hatch- ery has been lauded by the state and operates almost en- tirely through financial sup- port of local businesses. The long-range construc- tion plan is $36.4 million. The district is applying for a state grant to pay for some of it, but the major funding would come from bonds. 7 The school board must de- cide by spring whether to send the issue before voters, who could end up paying hundreds through their prop- erty tax bill. “The citizens of Warrenton, they support things if you can show what the benefits are, don’t overshoot and you ef- fectively communicate it to them,” Kujala said. “They’re going to support the essential services. We’re a blue-collar community. We support ed- ucation.” NOTICE OF SHERIFF’S SALE On February 8, 2017, at the hour of 10:00 AM at the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, 1190 SE 19th Street in the City of Warrenton, Oregon, the defendant’s interest will be sold, subject to redemption, in the real property commonly known as: 41962 Meyer Ln., Astoria, OREGON.
