Astor Street Opry Compa- ny is selling tickets for its fall production of “The Birds.” Daphne du Maurier’s short story, also the basis for Al- fred Hitchcock’s classic film, is directed by Sheila Shaffer of Astoria. It’s described as a gripping, unsettling, and moving look at human relationships in the face of societal collapse. In an isolated house, strang- ers Nat and Diane take shel- ter from relentless masses of attacking birds. They find sanctuary, but no comfort or peace. Another refugee, the young and attractive Julia, arrives with news of the out- side world, but her presence brings discord. Their survival becomes es- pecially doubtful when para- noia takes hold of the make- shift fortress—an internal threat to match that of the birds outside. The show runs October 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 20 and 21. Most shows are at 7 p.m. with one Sunday afternoon matinee. Tickets are $5 to $16. For more information, call 503- 325-6104.
