A8 GRANT COUNTY FAIR Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, August 17, 2022 Justin Davis/Blue Mountain Eagle Children on foot, bikes, Rollerblades and in wagons walk down Main Street in John Day during the Kids Parade on Friday, Aug. 12. Parade All smiles at the Kids Parade Continued from Page A1 The Whiskey Gulch Gang was also in attendance. They arrived with a bang by shooting their trademark cannon in the middle of Main Street to the surprise of many parade watchers. The John Day Volunteer Fire Department was on hand in its famous vintage fire truck, complete with working lights and a siren. Smokey Bear made his second parade appearance in as many days (he was also at the Kids Parade on Friday), this time riding in a Forest Service fire truck. Making an appearance on horseback were Prin- cess Macy Carter, Princess Raney Anderson and Queen Riley Robertson of the Grant County Fair and Rodeo Court. Rowdy Israel of Dayville, the Oregon High School Rodeo Queen and Elgin Stam- pede Queen, also rode in the parade. Area 4-H clubs were well-represented. A contin- gent of 4-H members rode on horseback led by a club flag bearer, and Dayville’s 4-H club rode in the back of a pickup truck. The parade was led a Grant County Sheriff’s Office patrol SUV, followed by a rider on horse- back carrying the American flag. By JUSTIN DAVIS Blue Mountain Eagle JOHN DAY — A parade of kids that included Boy, Girl and Cub Scouts as well as a clown and Smokey Bear marched through John Day on Friday, Aug. 12. The parade made its way down South Canyon Bou- levard and proceeded along Dayton Street before marching down Main Street through the middle of the city. The clown greeted onlook- ers while Smokey Bear waved to crowds and and greeted chil- dren eager to meet him. However, long before the gates swung open at the county’s fairgrounds, 4-H and FFA students were hustling inside the Heritage Barn to get their livestock ready for the multiple shows hosted at the fairgrounds. Between grooming, feeding and working with their animals daily, bring- ing their animals to the county fair each year represents a culmination of months of hard work for the students. An ag-based community, Grant County has a longtime tradition of local 4-H/FFA students raising livestock to compete for ribbons at the shows and then ultimately sell at the Youth Live- stock Auction at the Grant County Fairgrounds. Macy Carter, 16, of the Izee Live- stock club, who showed her market steer Friday, Aug. 12, at the 4H/FFA beef showmanship exhibition, said the months-long process, though stressful at times, is worth it in that it teaches skills that can be used in the workplace. Preston Boethin, 17, of the Izee Live- stock Club, added that there was a sense of relief once his steer was moved into the barn and settled. “It’s kind of like you’ve made it,” he said. Monel Anderson, 15, of the Izee Livestock Club, said that moment of getting the steer to the fair brings a huge sense of accomplishment as it’s some- thing they have been working toward all year. “It’s a really exciting time,” she said.
