NEWS MyEagleNews.com Wednesday, October 7, 2020 A7 ‘The Great Pumpkin Hunt’ Grant County residents safely strolled the streets as they hunted for pumpkins “THIS IS A GREAT WAY FOR BUSINESS OWNERS TO BOOST EACH OTHER’S BUSINESS.” By Steven Mitchell Blue Mountain Eagle This year’s only “First Friday” event, the fourth annual “The Great Pumpkin Hunt,” brought 50 to 75 new customers into local busi- nesses Friday for the chance at win- ning a gift basket for the person who could find the most pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns. The First Friday events, which occur monthly from spring to fall, had been on hiatus due to COVID-19. Etc. owner Sherrie Rininger, who along with House to Home owner Kattie Piazza started the First Fri- day events, said the pumpkin-themed scavenger hunt was a low-risk activ- ity where people could practice appropriate social distancing. —Sherrie Rininger, owner of ‘etc. A Unique Boutique’ Piazza said the scavenger event is typically her busiest day of the year. Rininger said the monthly events are a “neat way” for businesses to work together. “It exposes people to a shop’s products,” she said. “By the time they’ve looked for the pumpkins, they have walked through the whole store.” Rininger said the pumpkin hunt in years past has brought out people’s competitive attitudes. “It gets cut-throat after awhile,” she said, but the community-wide event brings people and businesses together. “Everyone gets involved,” she said. The participating businesses also included The Ugly Truth Bar & Grill, Java Jungle, High Desert Office Equipment, A Flower Shop N’ More, Radio Shack, The Grubsteak and The Outpost. “This is a great way for business owners to boost each other’s busi- ness,” Rininger said. Dayville’s almost 100-year-old campus getting a facelift Projects include roof, ADA access and seismic upgrades Contributed photo ADA accessibility has been a focus in the improvements at Day- ville School with accessibility provided to the main building and across the campus. Dickens has been invaluable in his expertise with great help from Scott Spencer, the custo- dial assistant. CB Construction has been working on the improvements, and the Dayville School Board recently named CB Construc- tion as the general manager/ construction manager for the seismic upgrades to the gym. The seismic upgrades are planned be finished in spring 2021. The new CTE classroom is expected to be available in fall 2021. “The biggest improve- ment is just the knowledge to our staff and students that the community really cares about them,” Hedrick said. “There is heightened pride that goes along with renovations and improvements. The fact that the campus just looks nicer, newer and more accessible makes everyone happy and proud.” TOM CHRISTENSEN CHRISTENSEN TOM CONSTRUCTION CCB# 106077 541-575-1113 24 hrs/7 days wk REMODELS • NEW CONSTRUCTION • POLE BUILDINGS CONCRETE EXCAVATION • SHEET ROCK • SIDING ROOFING • FENCES • DECKS • TELESCOPING FORKLIFT SERVICES ADD TO YOUR PACKAGE FOR ONLY 19 . 99 $ /mo. where available Timeshare Cancellation 2-YEAR TV PRICE GUARANTEE America’s Top 120 Package MO. S210268-1 Dayville School is getting upgrades. The new school year brought many projects to improve, renovate and add new additions, thanks to the help of grants and a bond measure passed in 2019. Dayville Superintendent Kathryn Hedrick said some of the work includes a new roof on the main building, ADA access to the main building and across the campus, a new elec- trical system in the elemen- tary school, a seismic upgrade to the gym and the addition of a career technical education classroom. “We are so excited and pleased with the upgrades and improvements and are so grateful to the Dayville com- munity for putting its trust in us by passing the bond measure back in May 2019,” Hedrick said. “...And then getting the other grants that will allow us to make the seismic upgrades for the gym and build an addi- tional CTE shop classroom. In May 2019, residents of Dayville approved a $700,000 bond, which received a $700,000 match from the Ore- gon School Capital Improve- ment Program for $1.4 million in improvements. Hedrick said the school’s roof and awnings are almost finished with some excavation work left for the final instal- lation of the new ADA-ac- cess sidewalks and entries. An ADA-accessible restroom attached to a modular for the early learning center (daycare) was installed. She said they are in the middle of the electrical upgrades project in the elemen- tary school. Hedrick said she hopes the bond measure repairs and ren- ovation projects will be com- pleted by Oct. 16 with possi- ble landscaping to finish later. Once finished, the school will begin the seismic upgrade for the gym. The seismic upgrades will be funded by a Business Ore- gon grant of $2 million that was awarded earlier this year. The CTE classroom will be a smaller standalone classroom built alongside of the current shop. “We have had some delays and so our students started back with detours and additional noise outside their classes, but Dayville students are gracious and appreciative, (and) they know it will be worth it,” Hed- rick said.”I have only heard positive comments about the new awnings and roof.” Hedrick said some of the improvements, such as fixing the drainage for the kitchen or electrical upgrades, are not as obvious but will enhance safety. The new lighting improves the learning environ- ment, she said. Hedrick said the board deserves credit for being such prudent stewards and protect- ing the community’s invest- ment in a nearly 100-year-old campus.
