John Day Basin Partnership hosting restoration site tours Blue Mountain Eagle The John Day Basin Part- nership, along with several partners in the region, is facilitating two separate res- toration site tours. These tours are for land- owners who are interested in funding opportunities for improving their working lands in the John Day Basin. The tours will take place in the Izee community and just west of the town of Gran- ite, on Oct. 15 and Oct. 23, respectively. These tours will provide landowners a look into resto- ration projects that can ben- efit both working lands and the watershed ecosystems, along with information on funding to implement these projects. On Oct. 10, people can participate in National Fossil Day, an annual cel- ebration held to highlight the scientific and educa- tional value of paleontol- ogy and the importance of preserving fossils for future generations. The John Day Fos- sil Beds National Monu- ment will premier a new National Fossil Day virtual video tour of collections on its website and Face- book, Instagram and Twit- ter accounts at 10 a.m. The focus will be on non-mam- mal fossils that can be found in the fossil gal- lery at the Thomas Con- don Paleontology and Vis- itor Center. The Thomas Con- don Paleontology Center will also be open on Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theater, Junior Ranger room and Fossil Gallery Joseph Lee Humbert Giles Edward ‘Ed’ Lindstrom Nov. 30, 1984 — Aug. 30, 2020 Joseph Lee Humbert, 35, loving son, brother, husband and veteran of the Iraq War, passed away on Aug. 30, 2020, at 2:15 p.m. at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon. He was born to Michael Humbert and De Anna Fox on Nov. 30, 1984. In his youth, he resided in Milton-Freewa- ter, Oregon. He joined the Army National Guard and served one tour in the Iraq War. Joe served as specialist from June 28, 2004, and was honorably discharged Dec. 31, 2005. He then attended Wyotech in Laramie, Wyoming, completing a spe- cialty program in diesel mechanics. He was married to Tonia Humbert on Aug. 3, 2013. They raised their beautiful dog, Annie, together. Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing the guitar, singing and spending time with friends and family. He would show up when you called, and he’d give you the shirt off his back, no ques- tions asked. Joe was a rare genuine soul and became family to everyone he met. His smile would light up a room, and he would brighten anyone’s day. He was known for being caring and loyal. Joseph was taken too soon, and he will be greatly missed by everyone. He is survived by his mother, DeAnna Fox (John Day, Ore- gon); father, Mike Humbert (Athena, Oregon); his wife, Tonia Humbert (Unity, Oregon); siblings Tawny Rose Brown (Spo- kane, Washington) and Samuel Humbert (Weston, Oregon); grandparents Sam and Rosella Humbert (Milton-Freewater, Ore- gon); many stepbrothers and -sisters, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and many loving cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents Barb and Gary Gentry and Ken Davidson. Donations can be made in Joseph’s name at Bank of Eastern Oregon in John Day, Oregon. The donations will be given to the V.F.W. and also used as a scholarship fund for a student attend- ing a trade school. Jan. 8, 1937 — Sept. 12, 2020 Giles Edward “Ed” Lindstrom met his wife, Ilona, in Day- ville, Oregon, where they were married on June 18, 1960. They were married for 60 years. Ed had a master’s degree, from Stan- ford University, in mechanical engi- neering. He spent 32 years designing jet engine parts. He retired at 55 years of age. He then proceeded to spend the next 11 years volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, and 15 years volunteering, with his wife, Ilona, at Montlure Presby- terian Church Camp in Greer, Arizona. He loved hunting, fishing, hiking, bik- ing, skiing and snowboarding. He rode his bicycle 16 miles, round trip, to his work for 22 years. He was a member of Mission del Sol Pres- byterian Church in Tempe, Arizona, and attended Community Presbyterian in Pinetop, Arizona. The family spent the summers at the cabin that he designed and the family built in Pinetop, Arizona. The cabin was also used for many skiing/snowboarding trips. Ed is survived by his wife, Ilona Lindstrom; son James (Darin Lowery) Lindstrom; daughter Lorna (Scott) Rischmuel- ler; grandsons Zane Lindstrom and Scott (Daphne) Fike; grand- daughter Erica (Sam) Felker; great-grandson Lex Felker; great-granddaughter Ruby Felker; sister Jeri (Dee) Kula; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his par- ents, Ed and Olga Lindstrom; sisters Lorna Thompson and Carol Muser; daughter-in-law Barbara Lindstrom; and son Edward Lindstrom. He was a loving husband, father and brother. Francis Martin 1935 — 2020 Francis Martin passed away in the VA hospital in Boise, Idaho, on Sept. 12 at the age of 85. He worked as a deputy for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and eventually for the Forest Service. He served our country during the Korean War. He will be dearly missed. National Fossil Day activities planned Oct. 10 Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, September 30, 2020 remain closed in response to the COVID-19 pan- demic. Activities are also available on the website, nps.gov/joda. “National Fossil Day celebrates the fascinat- ing science of paleontol- ogy, which peers into the distant past and explores worlds of plants and ani- mals that no longer exist today,” Roy Zipp, acting superintendent at John Day Fossil Beds, said. “The fossil gallery in the visitor center has been closed for most of this year, and we are excited to share virtu- ally some of the amazing fossils you can’t see in per- son at this time.” Additionally, the 11th annual National Fossil Day Art Contest is open to any U.S. residents. Cubero Joe Cubero, 79, of Canyon City passed away Sept. 27 at his residence with his loving wife by his side. Arrangements have been entrusted to Driskill Memorial Chapel. Clifford A. Monchamp Clifford Allen Monchamp, 70, of John Day passed away Sept. 26 at his residence with his loving wife by his side. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the Living Word Christian Center in Mt. Vernon with Pas- tor Sharon Miller officiating. Wally S. Elsbury Jr. July 13, 1953 — Sept. 18, 2020 Wally S. Elsbury Jr. was born July 13, 1953, to Walter Sam- uel and Regina Ann Waldmann Elsbury in Burns, Oregon. He was the seventh of nine children and the first son. He passed away on Sept. 18, 2020, on the Archie Creek Fire near Roseburg, Oregon. He had been wildland firefight- ing the last several years using his log- ging equipment and his skidgine. He grew up in Hines, Oregon, and attended Hines Elementary and Burns Union High School, graduating in 1971. He married Kathy Purdy in 1983, and they had three children, Angela, Mike and Shaun. He was a logger all his adult life and was awarded Logger of the Year from the Malheur Forest Ser- vice in 1993. He loved to hunt deer and elk and looked forward to opening day each year but also had a soft spot for all creatures. Wally was one of those people who always had time to visit or help you in anyway. He appreciated history and enjoyed look- ing for treasures of all kinds Wally is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathy, daughter Angela (Travis) Courtney and their two children, Peyton and Lauren, Mike (Meaghan) and Shaun. He is also survived by his siblings Barbara (Chuck) White, Carol (Chuck) Lynde, Sharyn (Darrell) Williams, Doreen (Bud) Hubbard, Lorraine (Ken) Palmer, John Elsbury and Monica Elsbury, his mother-in-law Mary Purdy and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Regina, sister Shirley and nephew Scott. Daniel James Armstrong went to be with the Lord on Sept. 25, 2020. He was born in Burns, Oregon on January 25, 1943. His family moved to the farm in Willowcreek in the late 1940s and then to Burns so his dad could work at the sawmill. In 1960 they bought a small farm in Willowcreek, and Dan graduated from Vale High School in 1962. Dan started working on ranches during the summers at age 14. His first job was working for Glen and Bridgie Sitz near Drewsey. He married Carol Duckworth not long after high school and they had one son, Richard Kypp Armstrong. Throughout his life he was happiest buckarooing for ranchers, riding the mountains, hunting pheasants with Roberto, Kypp and Jason, and hunting elk and deer with his dad. Camping at the North Fork of the John Day and visiting with Patty and Charlie Dalton gave him great pleasure after retirement. Going for a ride in the mountains with Dan would usually develop into a lengthy adventure. The roads and two tracks between Drewsey, Burns, and Prairie City meant a story with every twist in the road, time to look for deer or elk, or to look at a rimrock that had some special significance, or to listen to a hunting, or horse wreck story. Of course if he met someone along the road, he had to stop and visit for “just a minute,” whether he knew them or not. While working at the mill in Izee, Oregon, in the mid 60’s, Dan received his draft notice, so he went down and joined the navy. He served in Vietnam on the USS Seminole, as a boat coxswain. He piloted a Mike 8 boat on the rivers of Vietnam, many times under fire, delivering supplies and troops. While running the rivers, he was exposed to Agent Orange and that became a factor in his health in later years. Back in San Diego, he piloted the Admiral’s barge and received commendations for his service. After Vietnam he purchased the old farm at Willowcreek, where he had lived as a child, and he, Carol, and Kypp farmed for several years. In the 1990’s life circumstances changed and he sold the farm. On July 13, 2002 he married Jeannette Pardun and moved to a small acreage near Ontario. He is survived by his devoted wife Jeannette of Ontario, son Kypp (Kathy) of Vale and grandsons Martin and Thomas (Rachael) of Vale; sister Linda Bossen (Jim) of Salem, brother Charles Armstrong of Caldwell, KS, special brother Roberto Rodriguez (Marie) of Cuba, NM, sister Marsha Armstrong (Keith Carter) of On- tario; nieces Cindy Purdy(Tim), Jodell Bayan(Ezam), Roberta Counterman, and Renee Armstrong; nephews James Cooksey (Denise)), Nathan Cooksey (Robyn), and Jason Rodriguez(Cynthia). He is also survived by maternal aunt Iona Gregg of Bend, and paternal aunt Lois Armstrong of Naches, WA, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Velda Armstrong. One can remember him by being kind to everyone, listening to a Marty Robbins or Ian Tyson song, or just watching a John Wayne movie, one more time. A memorial with military honors will be held at a later date at the Drewsey, Oregon cemetery.
