A2 FAMILY Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, May 27, 2020 Hospital addresses concerns about rapid COVID-19 testing The most valuable and respected source of local news, advertising and information for our communities. Blue Mountain Eagle www.eomediagroup.com Blue Mountain Hospital District has several ways to order COVID-19 tests, includ- ing a rapid test on an Abbott ID NOW machine, as well as, utilizing St. Charles Med- ical Center and Oregon State Public Health laboratories, according to a press release from Health Information Manager Lori Lane. As with all other labora- tory tests, the results of the rapid COVID-19 test need to be interpreted by trained medical professionals. For example, the Abbott has been shown to miss some positive cases, which is why the pro- viders at BMHD know to not use the results of this analyzer or others solely in their diag- nosis. Preliminary studies are showing that the rapid Abbott Robin Dianne Early McGuire Dahl November 28, 1934 – May 20, 2020 Robin Dahl, age 85, of John Day, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, May 20th, at Valley View Assisted Living with her family by her side. Robin was born the second of two daughters to Nick and Marie Early in Billings, Mon- tana on November 28th, 1934. Robin married Robert “Mac” McGuire in 1958 and togeth- er they had five children. They lived in several Montana cities as Mac began his teach- ing career and moved to John Day, Oregon in 1967. Mac accepted a teaching position at Grant Union High School and Robin worked as a secretary at Humbolt Elementary. Robin married Denny Dahl in 1983 and together they owned Denny Dahl Realty in John Day. She volunteered for numerous orga- nizations in Grant County, Bend, and Sunriver. She advocated for organ donors after her oldest son, Rick, required a transplant. She devoted several years of her life caring for Rick before he passed away in 2015. Robin loved to travel. Some of the places she visited were Paris, France; St. Andrews, Scotland; The Panama Canal, and Alaska. She was an accomplished pianist and she loved classical music and opera. A trip to hear The Three Tenors in Las Vegas was a once in a lifetime opportunity she treasured. Robin is survived by her daughters Kathy Stinnett (Frank); Laura Stinnett (Charlie), both of John Day; and Dr. Karin Pappadakis (Steven), of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and her son Steve McGuire (Sherri) also of John Day. She is also survived by nine grand- children and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lavon, her former husband Robert “Mac” McGuire, and their son Rick. For the past eight years Robin lived at Valley View Assisted Living where she loved the view of the mountains from her room. test catches up to 94% of pos- itive COVID-19 tests, which means they miss about 6%. If a patient has concerning symptoms, a negative result on a rapid Abbott test would need to be confirmed by another kind of test. However a pos- itive rapid Abbott test can be considered to be correct. One thing that has impacted the accuracy of the rapid Abbott test is the swab collection. BMHD has five highly trained medical lab- oratory technicians and one medical laboratory scientist performing the testing, all of whom are ASCP certified. They are also highly famil- iar with the testing since it is almost identical to the influenza testing that is per- formed on the ID NOW the district has had for the last two years. Robin’s family would like to thank the staff at Valley View Assisted Living, Dr. Zach Bailey and staff at Strawberry Mountain Clinic, the staff at Blue Mountain Hospital, and Blue Mountain Hospice, for the compassion and care shown to their mother. For those wishing to make a donation in Robin’s memory, the family suggests Hope for Paws of Grant County, http://www.hope- 4pawsgrantcounty.com/our-mission.html, as Robin was an avid animal lover. A private family service is planned. Online condolences may be shared at https://www.driskillmemorialchapel.com/. Paid for by the family of Robin Dahl. S190445-1 Rental assistance available Blue Mountain Eagle Cory Lynn Smith Community Connec- tion of Northeast Oregon, Inc. announces the release of $162,250 in rental assis- tance funds for the counties of Baker, Grant, Union and Wal- lowa to assist households who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Households qualify if they have lost income or employ- ment due to COVID-19, if they are self-quarantining due to COVID symptoms or if they are unable to find work Born December 22, 1959, in Walnut Creek, California, firstborn son of Rodney and Sandra Smith he passed away May 12, 2020. Raised in John Day, Oregon, alongside his brothers Tim and Monty. His parents and brothers say his youth was filled with fishing, camping, and swimming in the creek. His mother recalls that “He grew up outdoors” and “just enjoyed life.” He especially loved music, and played trumpet and guitar. He enjoyed socializing through DeMolay and scouting and of course he loved riding his motorcycle! After high school, his mother Sandra says that “he wanted something bigger; he wanted to find himself.” This urge led him to join the U.S. Navy as a young man, only to discover he was prone to seasickness. Fortunately he learned that his seasickness wasn’t an issue in a submerged submarine, and he served 12 years, both operating the nuclear reactor on a naval submarine and later instructing at the Naval Nuclear Power School. He told many wild stories about his time at sea. His work in the Navy prepared him for a later transition to civilian life where he worked for 30 years as a project manager specializing in nuclear power and world-class spreadsheets. Colleagues and friends describe him as a man of integrity, empathy, and honor. His good friend Chris Warren says “Cory was transparent. He never had an agenda.” Cory was a confidante and saw each person as an individual with unique perspective. Chris shares that Cory always had a listening ear and will be remembered for the comfort he provided, “Talking to understand, not to judge you.” When stationed in Orlando, Florida, Cory met a striking 19-year-old redhead named Teresa Emens. Their courtship continued when she went to college in Idaho, and he was stationed in Idaho Falls. They married in 1981 and together they had two sons, Jared, born in Idaho, and Ryan, born in South Carolina. Teresa was a supportive and dedicated wife. Teresa’s mother, Judy Emens, recalls that she was always proud of his high standards. “He could never accept anything less than a 4.0 eval.” Cory and Teresa moved 25 times in the course of their marriage. OBITUARIES Corys’ travels, both in and out of the military, took him around the country and the world but always back home to his loving family. In 1990, he left the Navy for civilian life. Judy Emens says this choice was prompted by a need to be more present for Teresa as she endured surgery and poor health. His sons add that he wished to be better known by them. He shared his love of cars with both his boys as well as playing sports, such as racquetball. His son Ryan recalls, “Once we got on a plane just to go to Chicago and watch Top Fuel drag races because they don’t have Top Fuel In Florida.” Ryan also takes credit for inspiring Cory’s lifelong love affair with the Dodge Challenger (he owned an RT, an SRT, and eventually a purple Hellcat he named “Vivian”). Paula Dianne Martin A Graveside Service was held at Canyon City Cemetery in Canyon City, Oregon on Sunday, May 17th. Due to the COVID-19 virus, a celebration of life will take place at a later time. In their time together, they were dedicated missionaries for their church, where they were assigned to counsel and support those struggling with addiction. Cory found great meaning in this work and encouraged others to find peace in their faith as they began a new life. Michelle and Cory began a new adventure in 2018 as they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, they made many faithful friends and Cory had the opportunity to serve as a leader and counselor to the teenage boys in their congregation. Bishop Matthew Squires, leader of their congregation, described Cory’s service, “Cory was an example of faith, diligence, and calm strength to the 16 -18 year old young men. He was an example, leader, teacher of faith, and true friend to the next generation.” Cory passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. He died in his home, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his loving wife, Michelle; his parents, Rodney and Sandra Smith; his two brothers; his sons and stepchildren; and his five beautiful grandchildren. We mourn his absence and rejoice in the life he lived. Betty Inez McGetrick 12/10/1927 - 5/10/2020 Betty Inez McGetrickThe gates of Heaven opened to welcome a new angel, Betty Inez McGetrick.
