A2 NEWS Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, January 22, 2020 OBITUARIES Edward Eugene Bennett Richard ‘Dick’ G. Ray Madeline Ann Howard Jan. 9, 2020 Edward Eugene Bennett, age 75, of Mt. Vernon, Oregon, passed away on Jan. 9, 2020, at Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day. Ed was born in Astoria, Ore- gon, to John and Rosemary Ben- nett. They moved to Philomath where he went through all school grades. After graduation in 1965, he joined the Forest Service. As he loved to tell, he spent “37 years, 10 months with the USFS with a two-year break for Army duty in Korea.” Ed started in the Alsea district, moved to the Fremont district and then retired in 2000 as timber sales admin for the Malheur district. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fi shing and crabbing at the coast. But his fi rst love was family and friends. He is survived by his wife and partner, Judi; chil- dren, Sara (Travis) Blowers, Travis (Riccola) Bennett and Kristen (Mike) Stailing; three grandchildren, Gar- rett and Quentin Blowers and Berlyn Bennett; brother, Jerry (Connie) Bennett; and nephew, Matt. Jan. 12, 1925 — Nov. 29, 2019 Richard “Dick” G. Ray passed away on Nov. 29, 2019, in John Day, Oregon. Dick was born on Jan. 12, 1925, in Myr- tle Point, Oregon, to Maurice and Jessie (Norton) Ray. He was the youngest of four boys. When he was 15 years old, he started driving a log truck for his father. After graduating from Coquille High School, he joined the Navy. Dock was at the Sub Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and later in New Lon- don, Connecticut. The submarines he had been on were the USS Skipjack SS 184 and the USS Seadragon SS 194. Dick’s parents had bought a ranch in Eastern Oregon, located between John Day and Prairie City. After the Navy, he decided to work for his father. When Maurice died in 1962, Dick took over running the ranch. Dick fi nally fi gured out the marriage thing on the third try and married Evelyn Wells in 1979. They traveled to Hawaii for the 50th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor bombing. Dick was able to go on an honor fl ight for World War II veterans for four days to Washington, D.C. Dick was always busy and loved sports. He enjoyed trap shooting and golf. Dick was a member of WWII Sub Vets, Oregon Loggers, past exalted ruler of Elks Lodge No. 1824, a Mason and a Shriner. Evelyn proceeded Dick in death on Oct. 21, 2019. Between the two, there were six children, 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Dick enjoyed his morning coffee group at The Outpost. He loved teasing the wonderful staff at Valley View and pass- ing out candy kisses. Services are planned June 20, 2020, at 1 p.m. at the Fox Cemetery. Nov. 2, 1936 — Jan. 8, 2020 Madeline Ann Howard, age 83, of John Day passed away on Jan. 8, 2020, at Valley View Assisted Living. Services will be announced at a later date. Madeline was born on Nov. 2, 1936, in Santa Monica, Califor- nia. She attended high school in Weiser, Idaho. In February 1960, she was part of the 35th class of the Watchtower Bible School of Gilead. Madeline married Billy Howard on June 11, 1963, in Kitwe, Zambia. She was proud to have served as a missionary in Taiwan and Africa for 10 years and enjoyed reading in her spare time. Survivors include her husband, Billy Howard, of John Day, Oregon, and her siblings Hildegard, Susan, Bob, Emmy and John. Aug. 25, 1956 – Jan. 12, 2020 Gary Joe “Porkchop” Ham- mons, 63, of John Day passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, at his residence with his loved ones by his side. A celebration of life will be held in the spring. Gary was born Aug. 25, 1956, in Prairie City, Oregon, to Joe and Gayle (Masonheimer) Ham- mons. He graduated from Grant Union High School in 1974 where he was the fi rst state heavyweight wrestling champion. He worked as a mechanic for Doug’s Motor Vehi- cle Repair in John Day for several years and married the love of his life, Celaina Tucker, in Winnemucca, Nevada, in September 1998. Gary loved the outdoors, fi shing, hunting and boating. Gary is survived by his wife, Celaina Hammons, of John Day, Oregon; brother, Larry Hammons, of Ham- ilton, Montana; sister, Sissy Hammons, of Pendleton, Oregon; stepdaughter, Crystal Parks, of John Day, Ore- gon; stepson, David Parks, of Prineville, Oregon; and fi ve grandchildren. Drew Erwin Harmer July 23, 1960 — Dec. 22, 2019 Drew Erwin Harmer died on Dec. 22, 2019, at his home in Mt. Vernon, Oregon. A memorial service will be held at the Mt. Vernon Grange on Feb. 8, 2020, at 3 p.m. Drew was born in Long Beach, California, on July 23, 1960, to Winifred and Donald Harmer. He grew up in Ever- ett, Washington. After attending high school, he joined the Navy for fi ve years. Drew’s hobbies included collecting coins and baseball cards, woodworking and gardening. In addition, he loved the Lord and would regularly be found assembling for worship with his church family. He was also active in the community, helping out at John Day and Prairie City senior centers. Drew is survived by his brother Ken Harmer and uncles Dale Harmer and Jim Williams. Drew was preceded in death by his father, Donald, his mother, Winifred and his brothers Russell, Henry and James. Stell Hardy Benwell Stell Hardy Benwell, 72, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 15, at his residence with his family by his side. No ser- vices are planned at this time.
