A2 FAMILY Blue Mountain Eagle Former Grant County man shot by police in Bend expected to live By Garrett Andrews EO Media Group The man shot by police as Black Friday shoppers gath- ered at a north Bend shopping center has been identified as Adam L. Gilliam, 28, who was raised in John Day. District Attorney John Hummel released informa- tion Monday into the shooting that left Gilliam hospitalized but expected to survive. Hum- mel did not release the name of the Deschutes County Sher- iff’s Office deputy or deputies who shot Gilliam four times, or why it’s thought police shot Gilliam. “The investigation regard- ing the details of the actual firing of the weapon(s) is still active and releasing DA Hum- mel’s impressions of who fired might subtly influence eye- witnesses’ memories,” read a statement from the DA’s office. At about 6:08 p.m. Fri- day, police were called to The Shepherd’s House homeless center on NE Division Street in Bend based on a report Gil- OBITUARIES liam had stolen a car from the shelter. Responding deputies spotted the car and attempted to stop it, but Gilliam contin- ued north on NW Robal Lane to the PetSmart location at the Cascade Village Shopping Center, according to police reports. A deputy used a maneu- ver to turn Gilliam’s vehicle sideways and stop him. He was shot shortly after, though Hummel would not provide an official account. The deputy who shot Gil- liam is on paid administrative leave, which is the sheriff’s office’s policy. Gilliam is currently homeless. In January, Gilliam was taken from the Lava Lands vis- itor center to St. Charles Bend for treatment of hypothermia, according to Bulletin archives. It was thought by police that he had walked naked from Lava Lands to Benham Falls and back, and he was suffering extensive injuries consistent with walking naked through brush and trees. Fields School officials invited members of the Prai- rie City American Legion Post 106 and Harney County Post 63 as they presented a new flag pole Oct. 29 in front of the school. He and Legionnaires LB Adams and Ab Bezona as well as Post Commander Ed Nora Jean (Colton) Thompson Shirley May Wilson Nora Jean (Colton) Thompson left us on Nov. 29, 2019. No services are planned at this time. Jean, as she preferred to be called, was born on Feb. 16, 1928, at home, where she became one of 15 chil- dren on her parent’s ranch, which was located on the Powder River between Pondosa/Medical springs and Keating, Oregon. She attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse not far from the ranch and her high school years in Baker, Oregon. After graduation, while visiting a sister in Bates, Oregon, she met her future husband of 70 years, Elmer Thompson, and they were wed on Nov. 10, 1946. Out of this union, two children were born. The cou- ple lived in Bates until 1974 and then moved to a small hobby farm they purchased just outside Mt. Vernon, Ore- gon, where they spent their retirement years. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nora Colton, all seven of her brothers, five of her sisters and her husband, Elmer. She is survived by her sisters, Joyce Turner and Gail Stevenson, her children Peggy, David and their respective families. Jean was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed. Shirley was born in Portland, Oregon, to Bill and Mary Justice on March 23, 1932. She was raised in the Grant County areas of Seneca, Fox and Long Creek, Oregon. Shirley graduated from Long Creek High School and attended East- ern Oregon College in La Grande. Shir- ley married Leslie Wilson on July 8, and they were blessed with one daugh- ter, Karen. Shirley worked at the Grant County Bank in John Day and later at Oregon Telephone Com- pany in Mt. Vernon. The family moved to Reedsport, Oregon, in 1968 where Shirley continued her bookkeeping work with Winchester Bay Seafood Co. and Ocean Fresh Seafood. Shirley was a loving mother, caring friend and lifelong Rebekah Lodge member originally joining in Canyon City, Oregon, at the age of 18, later transferring to Three Rivers Rebekah Lodge in Reedsport. In 1997-98 she was the presi- dent of Rebekah Assembly of Oregon. She also served in the International Rebekah Association. She was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and American Legion Auxiliary. She vol- unteered at the Reedsport Senior Center and drove Dial-A- Ride. Shirley enjoyed traveling and made trips to Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most of the states. Shirley was preceded in death by her father, mother and husband, Leslie Wilson. She is survived by her daughter Karen and son-in-law Rick Arvidsoh, brother George Justice (Dorothy) of Soap Lake, Washington, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Dunes Memorial Chapel, 2300 Frontage Road, Reedsport, with burial at Reedsport Masonic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Fifteen students, two teach- ers and two parents joined in as Jerome read about the flag and two others demonstrated how to fold it correctly while describing the symbolism of each of the 13 folds. “All the kids who were interested learned to fold the flag — a little hands-on par- ticipation,” Jerome said. “It was well worth it. They were eager learners. They met while serv- ing in the military in the late 1950s. They were wed on Dec. 5, 1959. They have two sons, Todd and Troy Jr., six grand- children and three great-grand- children.
