A2 FAMILY Blue Mountain Eagle Fossil Beds artist in residence volunteers at Dayville School Blue Mountain Eagle Robin Jackson, potter and retired fine arts professor, was selected to be John Day Fossil Beds National Monu- ment’s artist in residence for 2018-2019. During his residency, Jackson and his wife Cindy Dillon have made several trips to the park from their home in Ontario, working closely with the park and local schools. For the second consecu- tive year, the couple volun- teered with Dayville students, enhancing their art program. “We loved having them here,” language arts teacher Sydney Thompson said. “The elementary kids learned sculpting techniques from Robin and replicated fos- sil teeth. The junior high and high school kids learned about using the pottery wheel and all grades learned glazing techniques.” Jackson recently donated three ceramic sculptures to the park that are meant to be touched. The sculptures cur- rently on display are of bat jaws stacked like cairns and the other is of a large bat jaw encased in cement. The third sculpture will be revealed later this year and contains jaws of bat, extinct horse and gomphothere (an ele- phant-like animal) encased in cement that mirrors the park’s landscape. “His inspiring sculptures demonstrate the close rela- tionship of science and art,” Fossil Beds Superintendent Patrick Gamman said. “Both help interpret the world around us. We are very grate- ful for all the work and time Robin has given to the park and local school. Because of his efforts, visitors will have more hands-on experiences during their trip to the park.” John Day Fossil Beds National Monument has been participating in the art- ist-in-residence program for over a decade. At the begin- ning of the calendar year, there is an open call for artists to apply to the program. For more information, visit nps. gov/joda/getinvolved/sup- portyourpark/artist-in-resi- dence.htm. Vernon and Seneca. It lies north of the Izee Highway (County Road 63), south of Aldrich Mountain, west of Flag- tail Mountain and includes portions of the South Fork John Day River. The joint management area contains 108,488 acres of federal public lands. State and pri- vately held lands that lie within the joint manage- ment area are not included in the analysis. The purpose of the project is to manage wild horses to maintain an eco- logical balance and multi- ple-use relationship on pub- lic lands.
