NEWS MyEagleNews.com Wednesday, July 17, 2019 Court approves rate increase at transfer station By Richard Hanners Blue Mountain Eagle The Grant County Court approved a request from Clark’s Disposal to increase the current rate at the transfer station from 4 cents per pound to 5 cents. That amounts to $100 per ton. The $10 minimum charge will remain the same. Judge Scott Myers was absent from the July 10 meeting. “This change will accom- modate the rising cost in oper- ations and unlucrative recy- cling program,” Nancy Moffit, the business’s owner, said in a letter to the court. “The last rate change was in 2008.” Moffit noted that every city in Eastern Oregon has a land- fill, not a transfer station. Solid waste is hauled from John Day to Baker City, which is 80 miles away. Fuel prices have increased from $2.89 in 2009 to $3.35 today, and minimum wage has increased from $7.95 in 2009 to $11 today, she told the court. “We do not charge for recy- cling metal, batteries, oil, card- board and newspaper,” Moffit said. “We do not accept glass, tires or plastic.” In other court news: • Airport Manager Haley Walker and Didgette McCracken, the OSU Exten- sion open campus coordina- A5 Lightning causes multiple small fires over weekend Blue Mountain Eagle Didgette McCracken, left, the open campus coordinator for the OSU Extension office, and airport manager Haley Walker described the Aviation Day event at Grant County Regional Airport for the county court on July 10. tor, described this year’s Avia- tion Day event at Grant County Regional Airport. More than 20 volunteers and 12 partners presented five hours of aviation exposure at 10 stations set up in hangars because of rain for the second time. The program presents a wide range of aviation career oppor- tunities. Presenters this year included Grant County Search and Rescue, T.O. Engineers, Southwest Airlines, a teacher Eagle photos/Richard Hanners Kelly Barber, left, will be leaving her job as Grant County Justice Court clerk on July 25. The students were rotated through the hangars and com- peted in a paper airplane con- test. Cash Madden’s winning plane flew across a hangar car- rying more than 40 pennies. • The court approved a request from Justice of the Peace Kathy Stinnett for addi- tional training hours needed for staff changes that will take place at Justice Court this month. Clerk Kelly Barber’s last day will be July 25, and assis- tant clerk Trista Collins will take her place. County court administrative assistant Kim Puckett will take over as assis- tant clerk, with both her posi- tions at half time. • The following commit- tee volunteers were appointed: Doug Cox and Deena Thomas, Extension and 4-H Service Dis- trict Advisory Council; Glenda Teague and David Driscoll, Library Advisory Board; Mitch Mund, Road Advisory Board; Frances Preston, Senior Citi- zens Advisory Council; Court- ney Montague, Fair Board. A vacancy still exists on the Wolf Depredation Advisory Committee. Weekend lightning caused 14 fires on the Malheur National Forest. Four fires, the largest of which was 0.6 acres, were reported on the northern zone. Ten fires were reported on the southern zone, the largest at 6.5 acres. All the fires have resources assigned. As the week progresses and temperatures increase, holdover fires will be expected, and existing incidents may produce additional smoke. To report wildfires, call 911 or John Day Interagency Dispatch at 541-575-1321 or Burns Interagency Communications Center at 541-573-1000. Federal lands within the Burns Interagency Fire Zone on the southern half of the Malheur National Forest moved to a high fire-danger rat- ing July 10. The Industrial Fire Precaution Level is still at 1, according to a press release. Campfires are allowed only in fire pits sur- rounded by dirt, rock or commercial rings and in areas not conducive to rapid fire spread, at a minimum clear of all flammable material within a radius of 3 feet from the edge of the pit and free of overhanging material. Use existing pits wherever possible. Campfires must be attended at all times and completely extinguished prior to leaving. Persons with campfires are required to have a tool that can serve as a shovel and 1 gallon of water in their possession, except in specially designated developed recreation sites where a campground host is present. Wood cutting is still permitted all day with a one-hour fire watch after. For more information, visit fs.usda.gov/mal- heur or call 541-575-3000.
