For the girls, Denali Twe- hues led her team Friday with 12 points in the 38-21 win over Mitchell/Spray, and Kyla Emerson had 8 points with six steals. On Saturday, the Tiger girls beat Grant Union junior varsity 38-21, with Twehues leading in scoring with 14 points and Emerson with 11 points and six steals. The Tigers, scoring right off the tip Friday, led 16-3 in the fi rst quarter and 24-7 at the half. “I was able to get a lot of playing time for the younger players who all played really well and are starting to settle down more and more with the extra playing time that they get,” said Tiger head coach Taylor Schmadeka. The Tigers again made a quick start in the fi rst quarter on Saturday, gaining a 14-2 lead over Grant Union in the fi rst quarter and 23-7 at the half. Schmadeka said Grant Union pressured his offense more, which was good experience for his younger players. “Once again, on both days, we did a great job crashing the boards and getting offensive rebounds for second-chance points,” Schmadeka said. He said the team will have their toughest matchup so far this season against Powder Valley at the Thursday-Sat- urday, Dec. 20-22, Union Tournament. He said they look forward to the competition. The Dayville/Monument Tigers boys also saw success at their home tournament with a 46-40 win over Mitch- ell/Spray on Friday and a 45-17 win over Grant Union junior varsity on Saturday. The girls will compete Fri- day-Saturday, Dec. 21-22, at the Helix Tournament where they will face a team from Bickleton, Washington. Studtmann said his team will continue to develop their defense, rebounding, shoot- ing and dribbling. “We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing,” he said. “These girls just work together, and that makes a difference.” Prairie City girls lose 1, boys win 2 at home The Prairie City girls took a 30-25 loss to Imbler in a tight game Saturday in Prai- rie City. The teams were tied 5-5 after their fi rst quarter of play and Imbler led 17-14 at the half. “It was close the whole game,” said Prairie City girls head coach Bo Workman. “The girls played hard and never gave up.” The Prairie City girls are down to just six players after losing Haley Pfefferkorn and Katie Hire to injuries. Work- man is hopeful they’ll be back by mid-January. Another player was out due to illness. The coach said the situation gave his less experienced players plenty of time on the court. “We’ve just gotta keep our heads up, keep fi ghting and keep it in perspective — keep trying to get better,” Work- man said. The Prairie City Panther boys claimed two nonleague wins at their home court. Prairie City led 21-15 at the half and took a 62-51 win over Horizon Christian/ Hood River on Friday. Prai- rie City beat Imbler 47-37 on Saturday. The Prairie City boys team placed second in state last year. They are 6-0 on the sea- son and currently ranked No. 2 among OSAA 1A teams. The Panther boys and girls will compete in the Alumni Games, organized by senior Levi Burke, on Saturday with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and boys at 6:30 p.m. Prairie City girls vs. Imbler Rilee Emmel: 11 points Samantha Workman: 8 points Emily Ennis: 4 points Hailee Wall: 2 points Long Creek/ Ukiah boys fall to Mitchell/ Spray in two Missing a key player, the Long Creek/Ukiah boys team fell to nonleague oppo- nent Mitchell/Spray twice last week, 71-60 on Dec. 11 in Long Creek and 76-51 on Saturday. On Dec. 11, both teams put up over 20 points in the third quarter, and that’s when Long Creek/Ukiah lost sophomore starter Thomas Kreamier to an injury. “From that point on out, it was fast break after fast break (for Mitchell/Spray),” Studt- mann said. “We just couldn’t close the gap.” On Saturday, Long Creek/ Ukiah was missing Kreamier and three other players. Studtmann said their oppo- nents shot the ball well. “They have some players with an explosive drive,” he said. “It was a good chance for Henry Grannis, Jesus Olmos and Marcel Kozhogulov to get out there and get some game experience.” Long Creek/Ukiah will next compete at the Dec. 21-22 Helix Tournament. Grant Union wrestler Drew Lusco wins title at Rysdam Tournament Grant Union Prospector Drew Lusco placed fi rst in the 285-pound bracket at the Friday-Saturday John Rys- dam Memorial Tournament in Elgin, beating Michael Dig- gins of Joseph/Wallowa by a pin in 18 seconds in the cham- pionship round. It is excit- ing to watch them grow.” “Ethan Moore, Ben Henry, Justin Hodge, Russell Hodge, Quinten Hallgarth and Drew Lusco all placed and did a fantastic job in their brack- ets,” Lusco said.
