B2 SPORTS Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, December 19, 2018 Grant Union boys fall by 2 in closing seconds to Burns By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle It was the final sec- onds of Friday night’s non- league basketball game that decided the contest between the Grant Union Prospectors and the Burns Hilanders in John Day in what turned out to be a barn-burner, Burns taking a 54-52 win with a shot at the buzzer. Prospects for the home team looked dismal in the first quarter as Grant Union trailed 26-5. The home team outshot the visitors 16 to 7 in the second, still trailing by 12 at the half. “At halftime, I didn’t say much to them,” said Pros- pector head coach Kelsy Wright. “We were get- ting great looks and great opportunities, but nothing was falling for us. I just told them nothing changes, we just need to focus more on finishing — finishing your shot at the top, and that’s what they started doing.” Grant Union came within 3 points of Burns in the third, but were down 48-34 going into the fourth. The intensity went up several notches in the final eight minutes. The Prospectors denied any scoring the Hilanders had in mind for most of the quarter. Grant Union’s Tanner Elliott, Tristan Morris and Jacob Vaughan combined for 13 points to tie the score 48-48. Elliott then hit 2-2 at the free-throw line — he was 5-6 in the quarter — for the first lead of the night for the Prospectors. Then Hilander Dakota Ceja added 2 more points. John 1:14 “The Word became a human being and, full of grace and truth, lived among us. In the final 17 seconds, Burns inbounded the ball, and Cade Tiller dribbled back and forth before tak- ing the game-winning shot at the buzzer. Elliott said he was proud of his team for playing with a lot of heart. “We took care of the ball and ran our offense,” he said. “At the end, they got lucky.” Morris led Grant Union with 19 points for the night, followed by Elliott and Vaughan with 11 apiece. Devon Stokes scored 7, and Gerry and Jordan Hall con- tributed 2 each. Wright said he was pleased with how his team came back. “Burns is ranked No. 4 in their league right now, so that’s pretty phenome- nal for us to come out and play some basketball like that,” he said, adding he’s happy with where his team is as they develop through the season. “They did a great job,” he said. “Tanner Elliott did another great job on the offensive rebounds — he’s just an animal,” Wright said. “Tristan Morris and Jacob Vaughan both stepped up and had some great drives. ... They’re starting to click at just the right time, so I’m extremely happy with that.” The Prospectors beat the Crane Mustangs 53-52 in nonleague action in Grant Union’s first home game of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Grant Union (2-6) will face the Heppner Mus- tangs (4-4) in their first league game of the season at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, on the road. The Mustangs tower over opponents with sev- eral players ranging from 6-foot-3 to 6-foot-10. “The thing with big kids is they can’t run the floor very well, and they’re not going to be great out- side shooters, so they’re going to probably pack the paint,” Wright said. On Saturday, Dec. 22, Grant Union hosts the Pilot Rock Rockets (0-5). Let our family of Pharmacists serve you! All Human Beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. from our family to yours! May your holidays be filled with laughter and joy this season. In The Premortal Realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally. The First Commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife. We Declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God’s eternal plan. Husband And Wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. “Children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations. The Family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed. We Warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets. We Call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.
