Veterans Gift Shop accepts donations Nov. 5-17 By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle The American Legion Aux- iliary is again organizing a Vet- erans Gift Shop Window do- nation site at Mosier’s Home Furnishings in John Day. Donations will be accepted from Nov. 5 through Nov. 17 during store hours. The community is asked to contribute items a veteran may like to give to his or her family members for Christmas. Gift ideas include slippers, throw blankets, gloves, toys and oth- er items. Each year Lois Wacken do- nates handmade afghans to the cause, and this year will give between 50 and 60. Donations are given to pa- tients at the Portland VA Medi- cal Center. Veterans can choose gifts for their family members, and the Portland American Le- gion Unit helps send the gifts out, said Ruth Harris, president of the American Legion Auxil- iary Ellis Tracy Unit 77. “We’re the biggest contrib- utor in the state,” Harris said. She said she was pleased to hear that news and although she didn’t start the project, she’s chaired it for many years. “It’s my ‘baby,’” she said. She added, “We’ve had marvelous support, and the money that is contributed to this project is spent right here in John Day, Canyon City and Mt. Vernon.” Unwrapped gifts may be dropped off at Mosier’s, locat- ed at 101 E. Main, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Harris said a person who pre- fers to remain anonymous deliv- ers the gifts to the VA hospital. Checks may be made out to American Legion Auxiliary and mailed to Ruth Harris at P.O. Box 35, John Day, OR 97845. For more information, call Harris at 541-575-0076 or Mosier’s at 541-575-0649.
