Later, an ace from Yui Asami put Grant Union ahead 24-22, and a Bonanza service error ended the set. Bonanza head coach swinging in the third set, staying well ahead of Bo- nanza throughout. Prospector McKeely Donna Romtvedt said play- ing in an unfamiliar court after a long bus ride was a challenge for her team. 87183 “I think we did fight well,” she said. “I thought they came together really well and worked hard for that.” Prospector Alcie Moore said Bonanza showed them what state would be like. “It’s a lot more difficult than last year,” she said. “They put up a fight, and I think we’ll definitely have to keep working hard.” Kaylee Wright said it was a good win. “We need to definitely work harder this next week going into the state tour- nament because we know we’re going to play a lot more teams that are real- ly good, and we just have to be ready for it,” she said. Hailie Wright said she was pleased with how her team performed. “It feels great to go back to the state tournament for four years in a row,” she said. “We need to keep working in the gym the rest of the week, so we can go back to state and play like we did last year.” Miller said she is excited to compete in the state tour- nament. “I hope we get the same results as last year,” she said. Abrego said they are one step closer to where they want to be. “Honestly, eight teams are done today, so we’re one of the elite that are left,” she said. No. 8 Coquille made a comeback Friday to beat No. 10 Vernonia 3-2 and advance to the quarterfinals with scores of 24-26, 16-25, 27-25, 25-16 and 15-8. Grant Union has seen both teams play in the past, and defeated Vernonia earlier in the season. Looking ahead, Abrego said the team will work on maintaining their composure and block and tip coverage. She said they would also have to work on not allow- ing a team’s lead to get to them. “If we’re looking to take home that blue trophy, we have to keep that tempo and gap on teams,” she said. If Grant Union wins Fri- day’s quarterfinal game, they’ll advance to the semi- final round, set for 8:30 p.m. Friday at court 2. The championship match is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Other teams compet- ing at the tournament in- clude: Glide, Kennedy, Weston-McEwen, Portland Christian, Oakridge and Central Linn.
