Sports Blue Mountain Eagle ROUNDUP Continued from Page A10 Heather Bowlus and Rocky Perkins, brought a lot to the table. They were “phenomenal and a great help,” Hand said, adding Skip Inscore and John Clark also assisted on a volun- teer basis. Two seniors will graduate, but Hand said he expects every- one else will return next season, along with two freshmen. “All the kids worked hard and stuck with it,” Hand said. “We’ll miss Cade Milton — he brings good leadership, men- tality of football and is a force to reckon with — and Gabe Walker-Hopkins was tough as nails.” Grant Union cross country teams race in Pendleton The Kyle Burnside Wild- horse Invite Thursday in Pend- leton gave Grant Union’s boys and girls runners a chance to see most of the league compe- tition. “We had some outstanding improvements at the meet,” said Grant Union head coach Sonna Smith. On the girls side, Erika Dickens and Makenna Culley shaved over a minute off their time, and Samantha Buck- haults also set a personal re- cord. For the boys, Jacob Smith, Tanner Elliott and Braden Spencer set season records. Coach Smith said they’ll have enough runners to com- pete as a team for both boys and girls for Saturday’s 3A/2A/1A Special District 3 meet. The boys will race at 3 p.m., girls at 3:30 p.m. at Pendleton Com- munity Park. The Grant Union boys mid- dle school team finished third at the Eastern Oregon Junior High Cross Country Champi- onships last Friday in Pendle- ton. Two Grant Union middle school girls also raced. Grant Hall placed 10th, setting a personal record with a time of 11:39.9, and of the seventh-grade boys, he fin- ished first. “In the boys division ev- ery one of our runners except one set their season’s best at districts,” coach Smith said. “Their ability to run tight to- gether gave them their best fin- ish of the season.” Wednesday, October 24, 2018 A13 VB Continued from Page A10 The Panthers jumped ahead early in the first set on sophomore Katie Hire’s serving. The Mustangs tied the score several times, and the set went into extra points with the Panthers winning 26-24. Crane won the next three sets, 25- 15, 25-17 and 25-17, but the scores could have been worse if not for the Mustangs’ poor serving. Crane had a powerful front line, including soph- omore Riley Davis and senior Katie Burns. But Hire, who went on to be named First Team All Tournament, rose to the occasion with several spectacular blocks and strikes against the Mus- tangs. “We had a big uphill battle,” Bass said after the game. “We competed well and tried our hardest.” This was Bass’ first year as a volley- ball head coach, and she was optimistic about next year’s team. “We had no starting seniors this year,” she said. “We’re in a good posi- tion for next year.” Tournament highlights included Hire with 11 aces, 90 percent serving and 20 kills; Ennis with 92 percent serving, 18 kills and 84 percent hitting; Emmel with 91 percent serving and 18 kills; and sophomore Caitlin Willet with 93 percent serving and 88 percent High Desert League All Tournament First Team members, from left, are: Jordan Valley senior Regann Skinner, Crane senior Elizabeth Jenkins, Prairie City sophomore Katie Hire, Crane sophomore Riley Davis and Adrian seniors Grace Nichols and Roby Young. In addition to Hire being named First Team All Tournament, Ennis and Tiger senior Faythe Schafer were named Second Team All Tournament, and the Prairie City Panthers received the Sportsmanship Award. Jordan Valley defeated the Adrian Antelopes in a competitive final round 3-2. Jordan Valley, Adrian and Crane will go on to the state tournament. week 7 of 13 • IT’S EASY • IT’S FREE ® 10.
