Sports Blue Mountain Eagle ROUNDUP Continued from Page B1 The Panthers (7-9 overall, 2-0 league) have three league matches coming up. Prairie City hosts the Crane Mustangs (9-11, 3-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday. “Crane is always tough, and we are working on preparing our men- tal game as much as our physical,” Zweygardt said The Panthers then travel to face the Locomotives (0-4, 0-3) at 4 p.m. Friday in Huntington. Prairie City hosts the Burnt River Bulls (1-3, 0-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9. Dayville/Monument football loses road game The Dayville/Monument foot- ball team battled in Friday’s non- league football game in Spray, but Mitchell/Spray/Wheeler came out with the 24-13 win. “It was going pretty good, but we were down on numbers,” said head coach Kyle Hand. Quarterback JT Hand didn’t play in the game because of a pre- vious injury, and quarterback Don- ovan Schafer went down injured in the third quarter. Most scoring action took place in the first half with Mitchell/ Spray/Wheeler scoring three touchdowns in the first and second quarters, and Dayville/Monument scoring two touchdowns in the sec- ond quarter. Schafer threw to receivers Gabe Walker-Hopkins and Mark Thomas for 12 points, and Tell Cox caught Schafer’s pass for 1 extra point. At halftime, Mitchell/Spray/ Wheeler led 18-13. “In the second half, both teams were really physical,” Hand said. “It was a good defensive game.” After Schafer went out, Walk- er-Hopkins, Thomas and Cox took turns covering the quarterback po- sition. In the final 30 seconds, Mitch- ell/Spray/Wheeler broke away for a 95-yard run to score a touch- down. Thomas and Walker-Hopkins had interceptions in the game. Hand credited freshmen Jaydon Hoffman and Zachary Ferguison for stepping up and playing well. “They made some good tackles and completed their assignments,” Hand said. To allow time to heal from inju- ries, Dayville/Monument has can- celed this Friday’s nonleague game with McKenzie. Wednesday, October 3, 2018 The Tigers will host the South Wasco County Redsides at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in Monument. “I think we have a good chance, as long as they heal up,” Hand said. “They’re beat up this week but still have high spirits, and they’re hav- ing fun. That’s important.” petition in our league,” Smith said. The Prospectors will compete at the Mustang Invitational at Thompson Ranch in Heppner on Thursday, Oct. 4. Varsity girls start their race at 4 p.m., followed by varsity boys at 4:45 p.m. (Middle school races begin at 3 p.m.) Grant Union cross country competes in Baker City Long Creek/Ukiah soccer defeats Umatilla junior varsity Eighteen runners on the Grant Union boys and girls cross country teams took on Friday’s Baker In- vitational held at Quail Ridge Golf Course. “Baker was a hard course with a lot of uphill,” said head coach Sonna Smith. “We ended with our varsity boys team running in a tighter group for placing, but we are still working up to moving the entire pack closer to the front of the race.” Smith said she was pleased with the better numbers of boys partic- ipating. Eleven finished the race. Eli Sheedy was unable to complete the race after injuring his knee partway through. Six racers on the girls team finished the race. “Middle school boys again fin- ished a strong third, 4 points be- hind Union which is our main com- Long Creek/Ukiah junior var- sity, a class 1A school, won their opening soccer match 9-3, hosting the 3A Riverside junior varsity on Wednesday, Sept. 26. “It was a good opening game. The kids learned a lot of lessons about doing it alone versus work- ing together,” said Long Creek/ Ukiah head coach Amos Studt- mann. “I think in the future they will pace themselves better and pass the ball more. We’re working on both teamwork and finishing with a good shot, because we got close many times and missed the last shot.” Mathéo Buchart scored three goals, and Marsel Kozhogvlov scored three goals. Studtmann said he’s especial- ly impressed with Kozhogvlov, a foreign exchange student from Kyrgyzstan, because he had never played soccer before joining the team. He said goalie Jesus Olmos blocked several shots. All of Studt- mann’s eligible athletes had play- ing time. Long Creek/Ukiah was sched- uled to face Riverside junior var- sity again on Tuesday, past press time, the match played in Board- man. The local team faces the Four Rivers junior varsity team at 1 p.m. (MT) Saturday in Ontario. On Wednesday, Oct. 10, Long Creek/ Ukiah hosts Riverside junior varsi- ty at 3 p.m. in Long Creek. Grant Union football takes hit from Kennedy The Grant Union Prospectors fell in Mt. Angel to the Kennedy Trojans, 37-0. Head coach Jason Miller said his team was talented and tough but didn’t perform well in this game.
