Sports Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, September 26, 2018 A13 S PORTS R OUNDUP Grant Union netters sweep two on the road The Grant Union Prospector volleyball team added two more wins Saturday for a 3-0 league re- cord, sweeping both No. 1-ranked Weston-McEwen and Stanfield (No. 25) in Athena. “The girls did an amazing job this weekend and worked really hard to keep their league record undefeated,” said Grant Union head coach Ali Abrego. Grant Union defeated Weston-McEwen with scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15, then beat Stanfield 25-10, 25-10 and 25-16. “Kaylee Wright was a huge as- set with her hitting ability,” Abrego said. “It is a pretty special thing to watch her and her sister (Hailie Wright) work together,” the coach added. “They have an incredible sense of trust with each other, and it something you do not see every day.” Trinity Hutchison and Sydney Brockway contributed defensively, Abrego said. The Prospectors were scheduled to host the Union Bobcats Tuesday, past press time. Going up against the Union head coach, who used to be her head coach, would make for some “com- petitive action,” Abrego said. Grant Union will travel to Pilot Rock on Saturday where they will face Enterprise and Pilot Rock for league matches beginning at 2 p.m. Dayville/Monument volleyball team wins in Harper The Dayville/Monument Tiger volleyball team, 2-2 in league, made the sweep in Harper Friday, winning with scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25- 17 over the Hornets. “We did well on Friday and worked on some of the important skills,” said Tiger head coach Kristi Emerson. However, she said they fell apart when they faced the Adrian Ante- lopes on Saturday. Adrian had the decisive win with scores of 25-9, 25-7 and 25-7. “We just weren’t as disciplined as I hoped,” Emerson said. She said the team would be go- ing back to the basics of communi- cation, trust, working on serves and “making aggressive plays to execute the game.” She said they need to learn to pull through the tough moments. “It’s still early in the season,” she said. “It was tough, but we learned a lot and learned what we need to work on.” Emerson noted they are down to just seven players on the Tiger team. Dayville/Monument will travel to the Wheeler Tournament in Fossil Saturday where they will face Con- don/Wheeler at 11 a.m. and Trinity Lutheran at 12:30 p.m. in nonleague competition. The Tigers meet up with the Burnt River Bulls at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Unity and host Grant Union junior varsity at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3. Dayville/Monument will host Jordan Valley for a Dig Pink Rally, to support breast cancer awareness and causes, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in Dayville. Dayville/Monument gridders fall to Harper in road game The Dayville/Monument Tigers experienced a 13-66 loss to the Harper Hornets Friday on the road. Tiger quarterback Donovan Scha- fer threw two touchdown passes in the game, connecting with JT Hand and Gabe Walker-Hopkins. “They’re one of the better six- man teams in the state,” Tiger head coach Kyle Hand said. Hand said, even though the Hor- nets were a lot more physical, he felt the talent from both teams was equal. “Gabe forced a fumble on a Harp- er running back,” he said. “A lot of times we were in the right spots but couldn’t make the tackle.” The Tigers will face Mitchell/ Spray/Wheeler at 2 p.m. Friday in Spray. “We’re really optimistic,” Hand said. “We should come out with the ‘W.’” Grant Union cross country athletes set personal records The Grant Union Prospector cross country boys finished sixth out of eight at Friday’s Footrace to Val- halla in Umatilla. Among the league teams racing, Grant Union was third, running the 5K on a course that included wood chips, grass, gravel and the Umatilla High School track. The Grant Union girls team fin- ished fifth out of five. “We had everyone set a season best, except one athlete,” said Grant Union head coach Sonna Smith. It was the first time Grant Union had a full girls varsity team compet- ing. Prospector junior Erika Dickens was the top finisher for the girls, set- ting a season record of 23:39.3, plac- ing 12th out of 38 runners. Ellie Justice also set a season record, and Rylee Browning, Tiler Voigt, Makenna Culley and Saman- tha Buckhaults set personal records. Junior Mason Gerry was the top runner for the Grant Union boys, setting a personal record with a time of 19:35.2, placing 23rd out of 60 runners. Jacob Smith, Jesse Randleas and Donavan Smith also set personal records, and Tanner Elliott, Gage Brandon and Braden Spencer set season records. Smith added, “Our middle school boys did excellent and finished sec- ond as a team with Grant Hall finish- ing fourth overall.” Hall, a seventh-grader, ran the 1.5-mile race in a time of 8:59.7, fourth out of 38 runners. Long Creek/Ukiah volleyball loses two The Long Creek/Ukiah junior varsity volleyball team suffered a close loss to Mitchell/Spray Friday in Long Creek with scores of 21-25, 22-25 and 18-25.
