Junior golfers putt for scramble tie-breaker By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle Fourteen Grant County Junior Golfers received two weeks of instruction in golfing basics from coach Ron Lundbom at the John Day Golf Club. On Friday, the final day, the group separated into two teams for a golf scramble to test the skills they had learned. Landyn Beil broke the 40-40 tie in a putt-off held at the end of the competition. Beil, who was a returning golfer this year, said he en- joys playing the sport. “The coaches help me do everything,” he said, adding he had improved his swing this year. “It was just a lot of fun to come out and play.” Rowdy Wilson said he would never have tried golf, but his grandfather encouraged him. “I didn’t think it would be as fun as it was, and my favorite thing was going around the course and hitting holes,” he said. Garrett Lenz, who will be a senior at Grant Union Junior-Senior High School this fall, was assisting coach Lundbom. “I like being out here golfing,” he said. “It’s all for the kids. I thank Ron for having me out to help.” Lundbom said he was proud of each of the golfers. “This is probably the most accomplished set of junior golfers I’ve had,” he said. “They’ve really made progress in all aspects of the game. I hope they keep it up.” Eagle photos/Angel Carpenter Silas Fansler putts the ball during Friday’s golf scramble.
