Family Car display shows aftermath of drunken driving A2 Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, May 9, 2018 O BITUARIES LaQuita J. Cook Blue Mountain Eagle LaQuita J. Cook, 85, of Emmett, Idaho, passed away at home April 12. Potter Funeral Chapel of Emmett is in charge of arrangements. A mangled car on display at the Grant Union Junior-Se- nior High School parking lot through Friday, May 4, showed what can happen when driving impaired. Julio Alberto Hernandez of Weiser, Idaho, was just 18 when he died on March 15, 2009, after drinking and driving. He and his girlfriend had attended a party, and when they left, he was visibly intoxicated. In Hernandez’s father’s car, Julio’s girlfriend drove to Nampa, Idaho, when he took the wheel and drove solo to- ward Weiser. His life came to a tragic end a short time later. Traveling in a 35-mph curve at a high rate of speed, Hernandez’s car left the road- way and went airborne, strik- ing a power pole and bursting into flames. His blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash was 0.21 percent, almost three times the legal limit. Opal Bernice Wood Futter Opal Bernice Wood Futter of Ontario passed away Tuesday, May 1, at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Ontario. The Eagle/Angel Carpenter Grant Union students and Lisa Weigum look at mangled remnants of a car in the school parking lot, which was involved in a drunken driving crash. The wreck took the life of a young man. Looking at the car, from left, are Tristan Morris, Collin Harvey, Cody Jones, Weigum and Dante Valentine. Hernandez, who enjoyed football and soccer, left behind his mother, father, five older sisters, two older brothers and his girlfriend. Dinner honors Long Creek fire, ambulance volunteers The funds will be used to purchase a hydraulic powerlift gurney. Silent and live auction items included gift baskets, handmade items, gift certif- icates, toys, tools, artwork and other treasures donat- ed by community members and businesses throughout Grant County and beyond. The dinner was hosted by the Long Creek School Booster Club and the City of Long Creek. Eighteen Long Creek students served the meal. Long Creek’s annual first responder appreciation dinner raised more than $9,000 this year. Over 145 people turned out April 28 to support the Long Creek Ambulance Crew and Volunteer Fire Department. “The dinner this year was great,” Mayor Don Porter said. “As emergen- cy services responders, we appreciate our supportive community!” Contributed photo/Eric Sines Don Porter, Joe Trott and Aaron Garinger auction items at Long Creek’s first responder appreciation dinner April 28.
