Prospectors overtake TigerScots 10-5 at home Prospectors host Bobcats on Saturday at 11 a.m. By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle big fourth inning spurred the Grant Union Prospec- tors forward on their way to a 10-5 win April 24 over the Weston-McEwen Ti- gerScots in John Day. Grant Union faced them again for a doubleheader Friday in Athena. The Prospectors won game one 6-2, then lost 5-3. Prospectors Cole Deiter, Russell Hodge and Zack Deiter each singled to load the bases. Then Wade Reimers bat- ted in Cole Deiter, and Ty McDaniel bat- ted in Hodge to tie the score, 2-2. Next up to the plate was Warner Rob- ertson who nearly knocked it out of the park, tripling and sending three runners home for a 5-2 lead. Weston-McEwen switched pitchers as Roen Langum came up to bat. The team slid to 15-1 and 20-0 wins over the Burns Hi- landers Friday in John Day. “The energy in the dugout really kept the game going,” said Prospector Brianna Zweygardt, who hit a 2-run homer in the first inning of game two. She said the cheering from teammates helps them continue to play at a high level. “I’m just proud of the girls for playing our game,” she said. Cody Jo Madden pitched the first three innings of game one, giving up one hit and no runs. Zweygardt relieved Mad- den in the final two innings, giving up one hit and deliv- ering five strikeouts. Mariah Moulton was 3 for 3 and Zweygardt was 2 for 2. In game two, Grant Union was up 17-0 going into the bottom of the fourth when Prospector Kori Jo Girvin doubled, batting in two runners. Hailie Wright followed up, doubling with an RBI. Moulton pitched four in- nings, allowing two hits and delivering four strikeouts. Zweygardt relieved in the fifth with three strikeouts. Wright was 3 for 4, Moulton 2 for 3, Tressa loaded again. Grant Union scored another run after Hodge was hit by a pitch, and the Pros- pectors led 6-2. The TigerScots added a couple runs in the fourth, and Grant Union’s Logan McCluskey made a victory lap in the bottom of the inning after knocking out his first home run of the season for a 7-4 lead. Prospectors Zack Deiter and Robert- son shared pitching duties in the first four innings, and Peyton Neault re- lieved in the fifth. Grant Union head coach Zach Williams was pleased with his team’s performance. “The girls stayed fo- cused, were patient at the plate and played good de- fense — and they pitched well,” he said. Grant Union has this week off and will host En- terprise for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 11. Enterprise (5-7, 2-2 league) is ranked 24th among 3A teams. Grant Union has only lost one game all season, a nonleague contest against Pilot Rock April 10. At 17- 1, 6-0 league, the girls are ranked sixth in the state. Special District 2 standings Grant Union/Dayville/Prairie City: 6-0, 17-1 Vale: 3-2, 6-13 Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa: 2-2, 5-7 Burns: 0-2, 0-13 Nyssa: 0-5, 5-11 Despite missing two of their top athletes, the Grant Union Prospector girls track and field team came away with a respectable third place at the Don Walker Invitational in Nyssa April 27. Grant Union head coach Sonna Smith said without Trinity Hutchison or Sydney Brockway, they were unable to compete in the 4x100 as well as some jumping and running events. “We were missing about 60 points we normally have for the girls team, so I was very happy with our third- place finish,” she said, adding there were some injuries lim- iting their events. The 3A Burns girls won the meet with 154, followed by 3A Nyssa with 133 and Grant Union with 95. There were 17 teams in all competing. The Grant Union boys team placed sixth, but were first of the 2A teams. Drew Lusco set personal records in two events. In shot put, he placed fourth among 50 competitors with a mark of 40-00.25, and in discus, he was fifth among 40 opponents with a mark of 125-01. Cameron Hallgarth had personal bests in javelin, placing second with a throw of 145-00, and shot put.
